60GB PLAYSTATION®3
80GB PLAYSTATION®3

NOT THE 40GB

they run on emulators or (ps2 emotion engine) hardware
The first versions of the PlayStation 3 featured an Emotion Engine on its motherboard to achieve backwards compatibility with Playstation and PlayStation 2 titles. However, subsequent releases of the Playstation 3, including the initial PAL release, dropped the Emotion Engine to lower costs. Instead, software emulation is used to allow backwards compatibility.

what are you going to buy?

in theory the 20/60 can play them perfectly.

Gamestop's used/refurbs are usually a good deal. We got our ps3(60gb) and an extended warranty plus an extra controller and game for less than the new console price - if I remember correctly.

We've still got a few ps2's though, what with hdadvance and having them in different rooms.

You may want to keep the PS2 if you want to play Guitar Hero 1/2. Supposably, if you buy a PS2 -> USB adapter, you can use a GH1 guitar on the PS3. So far it hasn't worked for me yet.

So I thought only the launch PS3 had full backwards compatibility and that the newest 60gb was also just emulated.

I've done a little reading up on this, and the 60G is definitely the way to go. Both 60 and 20 have full bc a few exceptions here and there, but the 60 has more USB ports and built-in wi-fi, not to mention the bigger HDD. The 40G model will actually play PS1 games, just no PS2 games. There's a chance Sony will implement some kind of patch system for the 40G in the future (like what the 360 has), but they have not announced anything of the sort thus far. They may never do it, and instead try to sell ps2 games via the PS Network.

But in general, the 20 and 60 models will play ps2 games. You can check Sony's Web site for compatibility. The only thing is ... neither the 20 or 60 are in production any more. You'll have to buy them used and the prices are still up there because they are in demand because of the bc.
