Playing PS1 games on PS2 with Component Video

Post by ott0bot »

Ok....so I've got a problem. I have a small LCD tv in my bedroom and I have my ps2 hooked up to it so I can play games and watch dvd's. I recently bought a sony brand ps2 component video cable for cheap, and it really helped with the game and dvd quality. But ther other day I popped in a PS1 game and i came up all fuzzy and the screen was split in two. I was like....huh. So i tried a few more games and either that happened or it wouldn't even have video, just audio. The games work fine with the regular rca cable.

Anyone know how I can fix this problem?

PS2 cant do PS1 emulation with HD cables, PS3 is seamless in upscalling PS1 games though so if your that desperate to play it in HD, get that, otherwise go to the pawn shop and get a regular PS1 for 5 bucks.

first thing i did, but looks like it wont work. i've tried adjusting the tv settings but no dice. It definately seems like an issue with the ps2. Some of the menu's are full screen, but gameplay is usually split screened and smashed looking. I've looked at all sorts of forums and sites and even sony "official" support page(which mentions nothing about the isssue) and it seems that I'll have to swap my cables whenever I play ps1 games.
Oh well at leat I can play my ps1 games.

The screen looking like that (split and smashed) usually happens when you try to play progressive scan mode on a interlaced TV. Why this is happening on your LCD TV is just weird, unless the PS2 doesn't upscale PS1 games to progressive scan.

just to humor myself, i just threw a PS1 game in my PS2 that is hooked up component. I didn't have any problems at all, sorry, wish i could be of more help

FWIW my TV does not support progressive mode (it splits and smashes progressive mode video) so i'm assuming that i just tested in 480I.

Hmm that's odd. My PS2 plays PS1 games on my Panny Viera in Component mode no problems...

It's either the TV or the PS2... Only way to find out is to go and put it on a proper HDTV that can handle 480p over component. If it still doesn't work you know the PS2 is faulty.

What would be a proper HDTV?
Here is the specs for the tv:

Built-In HDTV Tuner: Add HD-capable antenna to receive over-the-air high-definition broadcasts, where available. Optional set-top box required for high-definition cable or satellite programming.

1440 x 900 pixel resolution for outstanding image clarity
16:9 aspect ratio with widescreen, 4:3, movie expand 14:9, movie expand 16:9, super zoom and subtitle zoom modes; 3/2 - 2/2 motion pulldown

Ultrafast 5 ms response time

3D comb filter brings out fine picture detail and enhances color purity

Image enhancements include 3D MA deinterlacing, automatic skin tone correction, black stretch, blue stretch, digital noise reduction and green enhancement

Two 3-watt speakers; virtual Dolby Surround Sound system fills your room with rich cinema sound

Progressive scanning maximizes the picture quality of progressive-scan DVD players, set-top boxes and digital video recorders

PC video input lets you connect your computer to experience high-resolution images

HDMI input provides an uncompressed all-digital audio/video link for the highest-quality connection and supports copy-protected HD broadcast content

Inputs: 2 audio, 1 component video, 1 composite video, 1 S-video, 1 PC audio, 1 VGA, 1 HDMI

Outputs: 1 headphone, 1 SPDIF coaxial digital audio

Seems proper.

If anyone see something there that would cause compatabilty problems let me know. I can't see anything. I don't think its the tv because it works fine with DVD's and PS2 games. It's probably the PS2. What a rip.

Just to let everyone know. It is your television.

I have a 32" Widescreen Viewsonic LCD.. I was going CrAzY when I couldn't get a screen on my PS1 games... I thought I broke something because it was running beautifully on my 32" CRT.

Used the same cables, same system and re-hooked it to the 32" CRT and it worked. - rehooked it to the LCD and it was gone.

I could only guess that it is in a video mode Large LCD's cannot do (maybe the refresh is too low?.. I dunno)

only way to get by is to get a S-video cable and swap back and fourth... I know.. it sucks, but the only other alternative would maybe get a Component to VGA converter (if they exist) and run it through the VGA port - hoping that the quality is not lost.

This is writing from the US. The televisions here don't come with SCART plugs (oh how I wish they did)

Thank you all!
