Looking for hard core content providers / essayists

Post by RobertAugustdeMeijer »

Remember the days of Errant Signal, Matthewmatosis, Joseph Anderson, Pixel A Day, David Sirlin, perhaps HBomberguy...? I guess there just isn't that much more to say about video games at the level of critical theory.
Lately I've been mostly following The Electric Underground who focuses on structuralist analyses. Doing so feels soooo 2002, but hey, as Japanese developers are in decline and their craft is being lost, it's perhaps best to work on the fundamentals again. Tragically, it seems to me that most is to be gained through analyzing games through a hard core lens: high scores, competition, challenge runs, and speedrunning (if a game is well made for that). With info on frame data, i-frames, camera maneuverability, zoning, mindgames/yomi, input lag, etc.

Anybody have recommendations for YouTubers (or writers!) who describe games at their technical level?

Core-A Gaming. It's the gold standard. Although they seem to have turned to a mostly members only and informal format lately.

Yeah, how good is their (podcast?) content these days?
I liked how they made fighting game jargon easily understandable :)
