Dead Fantasy II ~ Why is this such hot shit?

Post by Mozgus »

I'm going to seem extremely hypocritical after just praising Kings of Power in another thread, but what's with the unanimous love for this this thing?

http://www.gametrailers.com/player/32364.html

Watch it and form your own opinion. Maybe I'm not a big enough fanboy of either Final Fantasy or Dead or Alive (or Nina from Tekken). This video just seems extremely cheesy, pointless, and shameless. In concept, it's just like Kings of Power. Both videos are about over-the-top violence for the sake of nothing else but being violent.

I guess the difference is that KoP was a completely original piece, with hand-crafted sprites, and brutal music that is carefully synced with the action. Dead Fantasy II however takes copywrited characters, gives them all very dull looking models, rips sound effects right out of KOF99 (or 2002, I cant be bothered), and animates them in ways that just don't suit the visual style. Somehow it all just seems incredibly stupid. It only gets dumber when you realize that the characters aren't even fighting in their signature ways most of the time, and instead are just shooting your standard hadokens and shit.

Why am I even posting about it then? Well I had no intention to until I realized that all the praise isn't just coming from horny 13 year old boys with no taste in anything. No, I've seen countless people in their 20's and 30's across many blogs, calling this the greatest fan-made CGI film ever.

The sad thing is, they may be right, in the gaming world. Very rarely do we ever see anything technically and artistically impressive come from game-inspired video fan-works. You want to see something truly impressive? Watch this. It's a fan-made video from a few years back, based on the Motorball saga in one of my favorite comics of all time, GUNNM (Battle Angel Alita). It has superb graphics, editing, animation, and it handles the source material with every ounce of care. It's the best example we have of what James Cameron's version will look like, if he ever gets around to working on it.

All I'm saying is that just because a product reigns over a mountain of shit, doesn't mean you need to show it a Zeus-level of respect.

Or maybe everyone is just seeing something I'm not. Whatever.

This is the 3D equivalent to those damn vs. movies that plague newgrounds. Sometimes, you'll get an entertaining one, but %99.99 of the time the movies are just sprites taken from a game with a random background (for some reason Sonic the Hedgehog's Emerald Hill Zone is chosen most often) and like Mozgus said, the characters are doing generic DBZ/Street Fighter moves.

That's exactly why I stopped going to newgrounds. It got to the point where most of the week's top 10 flashes were either sprite versus matches or zero-animation slideshow fuckoff-a-thons with kids failing at "teh funneh", and have no right to be anywhere near a microphone.

I agree. I found it pretty boring and a waste of time. People were going crazy about this over at Destructoid. I enjoy coarse humor as much as the next guy but that place is often full of group think anyway.

I liked the DoA/FF cg. But it reminds me of the HK action flicks like Dragon Tiger Gate or Zu Warriors. I really appeciate the nod to Drunk Master 2 that part 2 had. I don't by any means go YouTube hunting for stuff like that, I only catch that kind of stuff from this forum or <damn> fwds.

Moz, I actually think it was rather well done (and seems like a lot of work went there). That doesn't mean there aren't other fan made videos that are better in anime (like the GUNNM one that I haven't seen yet, as I haven't yet had the chance to watch that anime/manga - I've been told it's very good before, but oh well not enough time for all the good stuff out there).

A disclaimer is that I haven't played any of the games featuring the ladies (I know where they are from, but don't know any of the back stories or anything, and something which seemed to upset you is that this is totally out of context or something). In terms of choreography, it's obviously quite over the top, but as you said yourself you enjoyed the other video which is perhaps even more over the top and still artistic.

This time I really don't see the point you are making, seems to be a good video to me.
I don't know if the point is simply that there are people gushing at this while neglecting better ones, but even if they are don't let that bother you, it's their loss not yours.

Ivo.

Hey, most people agree with me, so I'm fine with that.

Really surprised, too. My main point is that DF2 has no point. It just isn't enjoyable on any level. It has no soul. It leaves a bad taste in your mouth.

I don't require all of my entertainment to be artistic or soulful. I won't gush over this but I don't see anything wrong with a short fanclip of some video game babes fighting. I also enjoy zombie comics, Die Hard 3, checkers and The Price is Right. It's just fast mindless fun.

Yeah why do so many people bash Die Hard 3? It's fantastic. I swear I've seen it like 10 times, and its still great.
