Double Dipping!!!

Post by peace4myheart »

I was just wondering how you guys feel about a game being double dipped or even triple dipped. Metal Gear Solid Series is a big offender, especially now since it is being re-released as a collection for all three games. Personally, I think it is okay when there is some new legitimate content being added, like the upcoming Persona 3: FES, and that goes for a reasonable price, like 20 dollars or less. However, most of the time I think it is just a way for the company to make some more cash (same game with different packaging) and/or to correct some of the errors that the games had due to time constraint or just bad programming or decision (Devil May Cry 3's difficulty). Thank goodness for patches and downloadable contents for the current consoles. I guess $$$$$ makes the world go round.

What about games that get re-released on a different console?

I'm mainly referring to what Square-Enix has done with the whole Final Fantasy series and even Chrono Trigger. I like this idea because it lets a whole new generation of gamers experience these old classics.
Atari 2600 (AV mod), NES, SNES (region switch for PAL), Virtual Boy, Gamecube, Wii (D2CKey), PSX (Stealth V), PS2 (independence exploit w/ 160 GB HDD), Goldstar 3DO, Philips CD-i, Dreamcast, Saturn (racketboy's chip), Sega Genesis 2 + CD2 + 32X + Power Base Converter, Game Gear.

Personally, if they have a reasonable distance between the two in terms of generations, then I'm ok with it. Rereleasing a game on the same console feels tacky to me, especially as a "limited collector's edition." I really can't stand that. Across multiple platforms is ok, as long as they're consistent. Don't release a game, then release it six months later with more stuff on a different console, then six months later on a different console with even more stuff (I'm looking at you, Resident Evil 4)! Graphical updates are ok with me, especially if the game is hindered by visuals years later, such as the rerelease of the first Resident Evil on Gamecube when compared to the graphics of the original game. Some old 3D games are just difficult to look at nowadays.

I guess I have to do some double dipping on the Metal Gear Solid Collection, because I lost my copy of MGS1, I want to know that I can bargain with the guys at GameStop, like get the MGS boxset and just take MGS 2 and 3 out and just get MGS1 in a cheap price, sure its not going to happen but hey its worth a try.

It doesn't bother me a bit. I'd much rather have a game fixed and reprinted than see it patched with a download. I hate that modern console games are being tied to bugfixes that may not be available down the road.

I think it's great that games get re-released, it usually brings the price down. I am a bit miffed that extra content goes to the later releases, like the with RE:4, but really I've been looking at it backwards. It's wrong to be sullen that other people have access to extra things that I don't. Surely it's better that developers with a sucessful game have the chance to add more goodies that couldn't make it in by the initial release date. One can say "Why didn't they just push back the release date and add those things in the first place?" Games have to come out sometime and there's always more content that could be added. Duke Nukem Forever anyone?

Sure it'd be nice to have one definitive version, but I can't fault companies for adding more value into games as they age. I remember Stardock mentioning in a Gamasutra postmortem interview how they earmarked a significant portion of their budget for ongoing content development. I guess that's just one of the advantages that developers have when they're working on the PC.

I usually wait for a game to be packaged with all its expansions as a cheap gold edition, but that's just me. I also enjoy the PS2 Greatest Hits editions, Nintendo's Player's Choice games, and Microsoft's Platinum Hits. Bravo for re-releasing!

It kinda bothers me a little to see games rereleased but if done right I don't mind but eventually would not buy that second version of something I already have. Maybe instead on rereleasing they could invest the time in making something better or newer with more story. Rerelease on another console like RE4 gamecube to PS2 was great and heaven sent for me for not having a gamecube, but for Wii... haven't played it but... why?why?why? Ninja Gaiden Xbox then PS3? why?

Rerelease on same console like Metal gear 3 snake eater then substance was excellent!!! A camera fix, more content and online game. Love it didn't buy either time ... :P ... but why didn't it happen first time? PC gamers (I include myselft in that) get patches for those not a fixed game to buy again, because if you are a fan you're gonna have the first version anyway right? 360 and PS3 should be getting that way. Always thought that gold versions with all expansion are a great idea also, specially with those reduce prices latter on in the bargain bins. :

Guess my thought are that game should not be re-released on the next generation console, they should wait at least another gen. They could probably sell even more game that way creat more hype. That brings me back to why the heck they release a game for a new console and try to fit that same game in a crappy way on the previous gen console. Such poor quality crontrol for game releases just to let previous gen owners get something new and get mad for not owning the newest console. On the other hand you have to encourage what sony did with ps1 and ps2 not forgetting it like microsoft did with the xbox and giving us a lot of great games even last year like god of war 2.
