Games That Have Rain In Them ?

Post by Ziggy »

What games have rain in them? Why make this list? Because I like the rain and it's been raining the past few days here so it made me think of this. And before anyone says it, no, the character Rain from Mortal Kombat doesn't count! Double points for listing retro games, but I wouldn't mind hearing about modern games as well.

The Legend of Zelda - A Link to the Past - I think this may be one of the best examples of rain in a video game. The game starts with Link getting a telepathic message from Zelda to save her, and when you step outside it's raining. Better still, when you go inside the caste you can hear the rain outside. It's such an awesome start to the game, and I absolutely love it!

Donkey Kong Country - The second level of the game starts off dark in the rain. There's no rain sound effect, but there is thunder and lightening. The storm clears up toward the end of the level and returns to day sunlight. It's an unforgettable first time experience, I'm not sure how I forgot it!

Mega Man 7 - It can rain in Cloud Man's stage, although I think you have to trigger it by attacking a certain enemy or it wont happen. The rain effect comes complete with the perfect sound effect to go with it.

Mega Man 4 - Toad Man's stage has a very nice rain effect for the NES. I like that it isn't just the background, it passes in front of Mega Man. And there's a nice effect of rain hitting the ground too.

Super Metroid - Yep, it's raining outside when you start the game. I guess Nintendo had a thing for this with the SNES lol. It's definitely an awesome way to start such a game. Although I don't believe you can hear the rain. Does the weather outside ever change?

Banished - Banished is an indie town building sim game. It rains quite often and has a very nice sound effect to match. It'll also snow during the winter months.

Speaking about snow, I was thinking about making a "snow in games" thread once the winter hits. But until then, let's talk about rain! What games have rain in them?

You use Mega Man 7 as your example instead of Toad Man's stage and weapon in Mega Man 4? I am disappointed in you.

Actually, I think MM7 was the first MM game I ever played. Or maybe it was MMX. But I didn't play the NES games until I picked them up in the early 00's. I finally beat MM1, but I've only played a little bit of 2-6. It's not that I don't like them, it's just that I suck at them. So I didn't know about Toad Man's stage in MM4.

Anyway, I just checked it out on YouTube. Nice rain effect for the NES. I like that it isn't just the background, it passes in front of Mega Man. And there's a nice effect of rain hitting the ground too.

Hmm, I vaguely remember this one. Was it an indie game? And it looks like it's only available on the PS3.

Ah, I forgot about Streets of Rage! I know in Streets of Rage 2 after you leave the bar it's raining outside. And it's complete with a nice rain sound effect and raindrops hitting the ground. Does it rain any where else in any of the SoR games?

I haven't yet played Breath of the Wild, but I've heard so many good things about it. Where does it rain? Does the over world have weather effects that come and go?

Which reminds me... It will rain in Xenoblade Chronicles. IIRC there's varying degrees too, including thunderstorms.

Well, the rain is gone, but so is the nice weather. Not too cold yet, though. Maybe if it's already this low in October we'll get snow early.

There are a ton of indie and modern games with rain in them, so I'll stick to the classics. Of course, the second level in Donkey Kong Country you get rain, though it goes away by the end. I think one of the tracks in DKC2 has rain falling, but it's audio, not video.

It rains in the end of Lion King:

ActRaiser: The Master makes it rain as one of the spells, but I'm not sure that counts.

The beginning of FF9 is a ship in a storm.

Wan-Fu's stage in Samurai Shodown series is raining.

Lots of racing games have rain effects. I don't know how old they go (I feel like I've played a few where you go through rain patches but I can't remember exactly which games they were), but XGIII has it:

It's in Grand Theft Auto series, starting from 3:

How could I forget about DKC!? There's no rain sound effect, but there's thunder and lightening.

Yeah, that was one of the first things that came to mind (that and LttP). Some other games I checked out that I thought had rain only had thunder and lightning instead. I wonder how many times that was for graphical reasons and how many times it was by choice.

Probably plenty of more open world style games have weather cycles come up.

MGSV: Ground Zeroes is pretty much a rainy night mission for a slice of that game.

Horizon: Zero Dawn

probably plenty more

FFXI and FFXIV both have weather effects that'll cycle in, including rain.
