Your 5 favorite memorable chiptunes by platform

Post by marurun »

I know we've been round these sorts of lists before, but I've had a couple chiptunes rattling around in my head I just need to get out, so I thought this might be a nice chance for us all to share with each other our 5 most memorable chiptunes by system (you decide how many or how few systems to share). I'm not looking for the best. This is about the tunes that have the most impact on you personally. Whether it's nostalgia or just pure melodic stickiness, I want to know which tunes move you and have stuck with you through the years. Which ones are you likely to be humming 10 to 20 years down the line, same as you were 10 to 20 years before now? I'll lead by example. This is a bit of a monolithic post, so I'm spoilering the sections so the forum post doesn't crowd out everything.

SNES
Let's start with the SNES. I have lots of complaints about the sound chip in the SNES, and despite that, some of the stickiest chiptunes ever to bounce around in my head are on the SNES, so I guess my nitpicks are indeed just that. You'll notice all of these are relatively early tracks. I think the early SNES stuff is in some ways more experimental, hewing closer to the arcades in some places and striking out in bold new directions in others. Most of the SNES stuff I love is very melodic, but some are really enhanced by the rhythm sections underpinning them.
  1. Actraiser: Filmore (Filmoa) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2ZP9ang6zU&t=266s
My favorite SNES soundtrack, hands down, and Filmore is the hook that grabs me and never lets go.
  2. Super Castlevania IV: Theme of Simon - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sySkD2Nfwok&t=29s
All the music in the game is great, but this one is the one that sticks every time.
  3. Super R-Type: Solo Sortie - https://youtu.be/uRYQWjU-mqk
Gotta hang in there for the fantastic solo you'd never hear in the actual stage because that track is longer than the gameplay by quite a bit.
  4. Joe and Mac: Stone Age Skirmish (boss track) - https://youtu.be/dxUhu2PvRrs
This is totally intense boss music with a catchy melody and a fantastic sense of rhythm. In-game it's even more insane, with deep, loud roars from the bosses.
  5. Hyperzone: Blast Furnace - https://youtu.be/oesI9KGqK1I
The soundtrack to this game is intensely industrial yet melodic, but also has little discordant notes, like one of the instruments is just a tiny bit out of tune (and it probably is).
Genesis
I didn't come to the Sega Genesis until much later. At the time it was SNES and TG16. But while the Genesis is definitely not my favorite platform, it has a lot going for it, and to downplay its audio capabilities is folly. These tracks aren't nearly so nostalgia-induced as the SNES ones. But it also means my experience with these titles is more piecemeal, so I'm probably missing some great tracks just because I didn't spend enough time with the library. There's a lot of good melodic material here and that's thanks very much to Hitoshi Sakimoto. Most of the Genesis music I enjoy is less melodic and more rhythmic and eclectic, but you might not be able to tell from this list.
  1. Gunstar Heroes: Military on the Max-Power - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TMtCyENNEgA&t=307s
This track starts SO strong. It peters out a bit as it goes along, but as tracks go, this starts stronger than just about anything else on the Genesis.
  2. Castlevania Bloodlines: Theme of Simon - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qxb7Zfay0dY&t=1378s
This is a remix of the SNES tune, and it does a great job showing off how a Genesis FM synth take can be just as rocking as the original in a very different way.
  3. Gauntlet IV: Sortie - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TnkXMZk_4_4&t=664s
I could easily have filled this list with Hitoshi Sakimoto tracks, but I do like some variety in my earworms. This is not an arcade track but an original Sakimoto/Iwata composition (not sure who actually is responsible for this, but it sounds very Sakimoto-esque).
  4. Verytex: The Void of Space - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IqxUe27KFyk&t=35s
This Sakimoto track bumped another from the list, and I'm glad it did, because this track is just so much fun. Three composers worked on this soundtrack, but this track is the standout and has that Sakimoto synth sound I love so much.
  5. Streets of Rage 2: Go Straight - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gGJGOv8HS5c&t=0s
OK, so I rarely find myself humming this under my breath, but it's catchy and gets me super pumped in the game. It's such a perfect representation of club music in a game. Koshiro seems to know atmospheric like the back of his hand.
NES
The NES is my first video game music love. No, that's only mostly true. I think I did encounter some catchy tunes in the arcade, but the simple stuff on the Atari 2600 and Apple II never did it for me The NES is the first system I encountered capable of producing game music that really inspired an emotional response in me. And the library is so vast that it can be a minefield to pick a favorite 5. But I'm going to lean into my susceptibility to earworms and let that guide me. The NES also had some audio expansion chips, but I'm going to avoid those because I have never heard those tunes on actual hardware from my TV and I really want to stick to the basics.
  1. Shadow of the Ninja/Blue Shadow/Kage: Stage 1 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zbv16UPb4yU&t=48s
The intro tune is actually just as good as this one, but this one gets stuck in my head just a tad more often. It is glorious and up there with the best Konami and Sunsoft have to offer.
  2. Castlevania III: Beginning - https://youtu.be/78706bv98S8
So many Castlevania tunes deserve love, but this one, while perhaps not the most moody or oppressive, is just a great tune. This is possibly my favorite Castlevania NES track. Perhaps it's heresy to say, but despite the extra sound channels in the Japanese release, I love the stripped-down US versions. They're more stark and really are forced to pull out the meat of each tune. I think they're compositionally excellent.
  3. Mega Man 2: Wiley Stage 1 - https://youtu.be/UzVwG4sfwS8
Capcom's NES output relied really heavily on musicality because their sound driver wasn't nearly as advanced as Nintendo's, Konami's, or Sunsoft's. This is a perfect example of how good composition keeps keeps things moving along.
  4. Contra: Base - https://youtu.be/s3gKFXPPR_U
Even more than the iconic first stage tune and the rocking Super C tunes, this one is the one most likely to get stuck in my head.
  5. Faxanadu: The Kingdom - https://youtu.be/SWRhzNYIiZw
Jun Chikuma is an amazing composer who has a lot of middle eastern influences in her compositions. I love most of her stuff. You'll be hearing from her again.
TurboGrafx-16
This is my favorite 8- or 16-bit platform. Not because I think it's the best, but because I think it speaks to what I wanted out of my games at that point in my life. I bucked the popular and stuck with the underdog and I didn't regret it, because I got to play a bunch of fun stuff other people missed out on. A lot of people underestimate what the sound chip in this little engine could do, but we won't make that same mistake. I didn't manage to include any of the great chiptunes found in many CD titles to accompany their Redbook tracks. I just don't have as much listening time with those.
  1. Magical Chase: Variations on a Ra Melody - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YozebT8JIXA&t=1624s
SAKIMOTOOOOOO!!!!!!! His only TG16 soundtrack, and it's great. This track in particularly sounds ethereal, but also rocks the bass on a system that sometimes has trouble with bassy notes.
  2. Devil's Crush: Main Stage Theme - https://youtu.be/nHCCoNyNFtY
The Genesis has a version of this game and it's pretty good there, too, but I think the Turbo rocks it better. Seems to use the same sound engine as Blazing Lazers (Compile loves to reuse code, which is a smart move) but does more with it.
  3. Air Zonk: Aqua Base - https://youtu.be/9IJcqceH3CM
This Hudson shooter take the Coryoon engine, including the fantastic sound engine, and runs with it. I think the audio code has something like 20% CPU overhead, but with what it can do there's no question why.
  4. Bomberman '93: Quarry Planet - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R245tvNfQEM&t=212s
Jun Chikuma does such interesting things with the elements of the Bomberman theme across all her tracks, and this one incorporates clearly middle eastern sections.
  5. Parasol Stars: Rainbow World - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQII7lfTZX4&t=295s
Most of Taito's TG-16 soundtracks were strange adaptations that sounded a little harsh. Perhaps they were trying too hard to adapt the stridency of the FM synth hardware from the arcade. But this was a console original, and it shows. The music is much better suited to the hardware and the tunes are catch as all getout. And this track is one of my favorites. Quite an upbeat tune.
So what do you folks love? What 5 tracks speak to you? Go as nuts as I did (or even more, if you're so inclined) or keep it simple, one platform at a time. I'm looking forward to finding out what you love.

Great topic. This one will require a lot of thought for me, I'll have to circle back with my top 5's later.

Don't know that I can come up with a top 5 for every system, I think the nes is king when it comes to music for me but I'll go ahead and rattle off some of my favorite tunes

1. Just about every track from contra, especially the first 2 stages
2. turbo tunnel from battletoads, so damn catchy
3. opening theme from castlevania 1 (although it sounds better in 3 when you first get to dracs castle) as well as the music that plays when you get to dracs staircase
4. the final room music and the first stage music in the original nes double dragon
5. the ninja gaiden and mega man 2 boss themes

SNES:

1. I dont know the names of the particuar tracks but castlevania x has one of the best soundtracks on the system
2. actraiser has the best title theme music in video game history, completely epic
3. the music that plays when you get drac down to half health in castlevania 4
4. opening level from super ghouls n ghosts
5. title theme from Super Mario world

Genesis

1. warsong: the same music plays for basically the entire game and both themes are completely burned into my head
2/ Just about every theme in streets of rage 2, especially the boss themes
3. even though I hate sonic, green hill zone has some super catchy music, and the underwater timer randomnly pops into my head

My choices will be very mainstream as I haven't ever really dug too far into the catalogues of these systems. I'm also going to switch out the Turbo for the Master System if that's okay.

NES
Clockwork - Castlevania 3 (Famicom)
The NES version is also good but the added kick on the fami version is kind of outstanding in the complexity it achieves on such limited hardware.

Endless Wind - Final Fantasy 3
Similar to Clockwork is able to sound really epic and sets you up brilliantly for adventure.

Crash Man - Mega Man 2
Just funky as hell. A real earworm.

Stage 2 - Batman
Not a very Batman song but really upbeat and catchy.

Niagra - Ducktales 2
The original has a superb OST but I think this single song in the sequel is my fave. It kind of makes me nostalgic for my many hours playing on Game Boy on road trips.

SNES
Boss Theme - Final Fantasy IV
That bass!

Red Canyon - F-Zero
That other bass!

Koopa Beach - Super Mario Kart
I became obsessed with SMK when I was about 9/10 and this was my favourite track from the game.

Corneria - Starfox
The combination of the 3D graphics and this catchy tune blew my tiny mind back in 95.

Terra/Tina - Final Fantasy VI
A much more complicated overworld theme than Endless Wind, this is about as epic and moving as the SNES got. Instantly evokes a struggle but with hope behind it.

Master System (yes it can have good music).
Side-crawlers Dance - Wonderboy III: The Dragon's Trap
Catchy as hell tune that is bright, sunny and lets you know this game is going to be a good time.

Bridge Zone - Sonic the Hedgehog
A very sweet and hummable tune and a completely new composition for the SMS version. Quite short but will get stuck in your head.

Intro - Phantasy Star
Bit of a cop out but I liked it enough to let it play through before hitting start.

Raid of the helicopters - Alex Kidd in Shinobi World
Jaunty tune that has a sort of bittersweet melody. Was caught in my head after one playthrough, was still good on repeat listens.

Round 1 - Quartet
Sounds like either an intro to a saturday morning cartoon or a lost Crystal Castles B-side. Either way catchy and surprisingly complex.
Mega Drive
The Escape - Aladdin
Or Arab rock 2 as it's sometimes known, one of the few totally original pieces in the game and it's a totally rad, high tempo effort that perfectly accompanies the hardest level in the game.

Flying Battery Act 1 - Sonic and Knuckles
Another high tempo bop, it's jerky melody always gets my foot tapping.

Iron Blue Intention - Castlevania: Bloodlines
Manages to be a total bop while also sounding gothic and menacing as hell. Sublime.

Alien Power - Streets of Rage 2
This manages to bring back memories both of trying (and failing) to beat this game with my 7 year old brain and just generally the early 90s vibe I sort of absorbed by osmosis living in Manchester when house and acid house in particular were super popular.

Main Table - Dragon's Fury
Love this song, it's very long and complicated for a 16-bit tune and it also elevates a pinball game to the point it feels as epic in scope as a JRPG.

I’m going to start with NES:

1. World 1-1 Theme - Super Mario Bros.
To me, this is THE classic NES music. It is the best, most memorable track on the system’s most popular game.

2. Crash Man Theme - Mega Man 2
Mega Man 2 is the apex of 8-bit chip tunes (and, IMO, action-platformers), and I could fill this entire list with songs from that game. The Crash Man theme stands out even among those songs, though. So, so good.

3. World 1-1 Theme - Super Mario Bros. 2
I love the old-times ragtime sound in this game. It’s so catchy, and I would be delighted to hear it again in a new Mario game.

4. Bloody Tears - Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest
It pains me not to include the themes from Castlevania and Castlevania III, but although it’s my least favorite game of the NES trilogy, I must admit that Castlevania II has the best music. This is the one song that always puts a smile on my face when I hear new versions in later games in the series (or in the Netflix series!), and the “organ” arrangement that precedes it is just so awesome.

5. Introduction - The Legend of Zelda
The over world theme may be better-remembered, but this track really sets the stage for one of gaming’s best series. The fantastic transition to the menacing drum line about half-way through the track is particularly noteworthy (and particularly awesome).

Honorable Mentions
Pause - Battletoads
Title Screen - Double Dragon
Level 2 (Base) - Contra
Ashtar’s Theme - Ninja Gaiden II

I'm stunned by how good the Phantasy Star title themes are. In addition to the one you mentioned, the ones that lead off parts II and III are among my favorite gaming tracks ever. As is the one that begins Phantasy Star Adventure (GG).

I don't have time to make one huge post. Here's NES/Fami/FDS:

Mega Man 2 - Dr. Wily's Castle
It's good.

Mother - Mother Earth
Really pretty sentimental piece. Sets the mood right as the game begins.

The Legend of Zelda - Intro
This is so lovely. The way the music syncs up to the darkening sky and text crawl is amazing. Please look up the manual for details.

Contra - Jungle Theme
It just rules. The quintessential energetic "stage 1" music.

Metroid - Intro
Yes, another title screen theme! Perfect mix of ominous and hopeful. May be the best track on the NES.

All these picks are pretty great and pretty sticky. I probably would have chosen some more iconic or "traditional" tracks (like Mario tracks), except that the way I remember them in my head is starting to get increasingly out of sync with how they sound in-game. Further, I've spent a lot of time with the later All-Stars releases of the first 3 Mario games, and so it has clouded my memory of them. I remember the tune clearly, but something always sounds off a bit when I go back to listen to them, regardless of the platform. They've become so embedded in my mind that I can't suss my mental image of the tracks from the reality.

SNES - my favorite sound chip...

Terranigma - Crysta
One of the most heartwarming town themes ever. The addition of sparse percussion (it sounds like a pellet drum.... or a woodpecker) elevates this track to a higher plane.

EarthBound - Eight Melodies
I love everything about EarthBound. Including its abundance of "tearjerker" tracks.

Secret of Mana - Leave Time for Love
One of most unexpected (and triumphant) final dungeon themes. Just gorgeous. Cool title too, I absolutely love it (haha).

Chrono Trigger - Guardia Castle
Such a cool regal castle theme, my favorite ever (though the one in Link to the Past is up there too). The neatest thing about this tune is how it syncs perfectly with the gameplay. Assuming you're playing at "normal" speed you'll be frantically dashing up the castle stairs right as the climax hits.

Final Fantasy VI - Terra's Theme
Eschewing the obvious grandiose themes (like Dancing Mad and the massive ending piece) for this, which may be the most sublime track in all of gaming. True story: I remember playing this game for the first time (I was 12 or so) -- when I walked out into the sparse and sullen overworld and this tune dropped I knew that FFVI was destined to be my favorite game ever. It still is.

The C64 is a HUGE blind spot in my console/PC game history. Never really interacted with one. I know it mostly by reputation. I'll give those tunes a listen.

Also, I have no idea what a German graduation party is like. Perhaps the music will conjure an image for me (and likely a very incorrect one, knowing how I think) .
