Games You Gave Up On 2020

Post by Markies »

These are the games you wouldn't or couldn't beat.
Games that you gave up on and moved onto another game.
Games you removed from your Backlog or sold to a local store.

I gave up on Sega GT for the Sega Dreamcast this evening!

I always have a fondness for racing games. However, I've begun to realize that they can be very hit or miss. Some feel fantastic while others feel really bad.

Sega GT kind of falls in between, but it favors towards the bad. You either are too loose with your turns or it feels too tight. And the over steering is extremely prevalent as you will pinball throughout the entire course.

So, the game tries to be like Gran Turismo with different licenses that you can beat and unlock. You also have a create a car option. You have to create a car to move on in the game and you need to beat licenses to move on as well. At times, you have to use your create a car on these licenses and those are impossible. When your best and souped up car cannot beat a 20 second trial that is basically one turn, then there is really nothing you can do.

I tried all of Sunday and I could not get past a single license test. And with the bad controls, I kind of gave up on it. Time to move on!

Ah, that's too bad. I remember it being kind of weird in some ways, but I still liked Sega GT, back in the day. I didn't play a whole lot of it, but I'm pretty sure I did a few of the licensing challenges. I think I had to have, because I'm almost positive I was able to get my dream car (at least the more reasonable one not named the Shelby GT500) in the 3000GT. I'm pretty sure I had gotten the Viper as well. I remember the early grind being tough, and getting better parts for tuning made all the difference in the world. I feel like I might need to play this again sometime soon.

Oh, also, about the oversteer: I assume you're playing with a OEM DC controller, right? I find that with the Dreamcast analog stick, because there's basically no dead zone, and it's a really tight stick, pushing it up, and rolling it along the top arc gives me a better resolution in the steering controls for most racing games on the console. It even helps a bit with Hang-On in Shenmue.

I've given up on a few PS2 games recently. Shinobi is not really worth the aggravation and absolutely pales in comparison to Ninja Gaiden and Devil May Cry, never mind more recent titles

Evergrace is a Fromsoft game that is from their period where they didn't just do Soulslikes but also weren't as big so dropped a few turds. Evergrace is a turd, really slow and barebones action-rpg with nothing really to recommend aside from its bizarre soundtrack.

And finally Shadow of Rome which is the most disappointing. I thought it might be a hidden gem, and it probably is for people with the patience, but it never really comes together. The stealth sections are not stealth sections as it's a Japanese game so they are more like puzzles and the gladiator battles are too clunky and rely a little too much on luck. So basically both gameplay sections of the game are mediocre and progression becomes a chore. Real shame.

Finally someone agrees with me. It has its moments but it overall is quite clunky. Plus the voice acting is abysmal.

One of my first youtube video reviews is on that game and it almost has as many dislikes as likes

Screamer 4x4 has such a great concept. A "racing" game that is honestly closer to a puzzle game, as the biggest challenge is just completing the course. It's down to the inaccessibility of it. You will lose traction and flip so often, which I'm fine with. The problem is the course design. It's SO EASY to get lost that it's at the point that the game is ruined. I find myself going through checkpoints, having no clue where to go, eventually finding where to go, but having to restart the race because I lost way too much time searching for it. When the courses start reaching 2-3 minutes, that's when it gets beyond frustrating.

Edit: So apparently I looked at the manual and there's a map button... Derp. Will try it again.

Just gave up on an indie game called reknum for the switch, absolutely horrible platformer, easily one of the worst I ever played.

the game looks good, the trailer shows a decent looking, 8-bit game, and its under 5 dollars so I figured it was worth a shot but it didnt take long before the host of problems began cropping up:

1. cheap deaths everywhere, this is one of those games that are hard for all the wrong reasons. Like your standing in a spot and all of a sudden something falls from the top of the screen instantly killing you, you had no way of knowing it was there, next time you know it is there and you just repeat the process over and over again. This is compounded in a level that is all dark and you have only a small glowing sphere around you with pitfalls and instant death traps everywhere, all completely impossible to see.

2. No checkpoints: the levels are fairly long and there are no checkpoints, which means when you die by something you could not see, it is back to the beginning and you are forced to slog through the whole ordeal again. This is made worse by the fact that when you are not getting instantly killed by something you couldnt see, the game is mind numbingly easy and bland. Which means you walk through boring, easy sections, die by something you cant see, then next time pass that part, and repeat until its over

3. Fake level exits: this is whole new thing I have never seen before. I just beat the first world boss and I then enter into a large sewer level. I make my way to the end and there is a door with a large arrow over it. I enter the door and I am taking back to the last worlds boss, that I now have to fight and defeat again. There is literally no way to know that the door is a trick and I can't imagine how many more times this happens through this atrocious game

This is easily one of the worst games I have ever played in my life, it is actually offensive to me that it exists, and if I ever meet the developers of the game at a random indie games expo I am pretty sure I will choke them out to avenge the hour or 2 of my life I lost playing this atrocious game.

If you love 8-bit retro styled games and own a switch, the trailer for this game will tempt you, no matter how cheap it gets avoid at all costs, it is absolutely terrible and may be the worst game in existence.

If only I'd posted sooner I could have saved you.

If you do get around to playing it I would love to hear your thoughts, but your time will be much better spent playing some obscure Atari or Famicom game

I actually plan on playing it to completion this year (I'm in a GameFAQs challenge and need to beat/review a 2020 game and since I don't play much current gen AAA stuff it's gonna have to be an indie).

I'll letcha know how it goes.

If you wind up hating it as much as I did and don't want to finish it let me know, I am sure I could find a good retro platformer that has been released this year for you to play instead
