In a recent thread i was debating whether to get a hdd divx media player, i decided to get a standard dvd divx player, mine just happen to include a nifty usb port that can be used for thumb flash drives. i figured out how to connect an external hard drive to it and stream movies to the dvd player. all you need is the following.

1. external hdd drive with/caddy. it has to have own power source.

2. this program called swissknife
http://www.downloadsource.net/7417/SwissKnife/

3. and a computer, laptop or desk.

all you have to do it connect the external hard drive to any computer via usb and use the swissknife program to format the external hard drive using fat32. (it will only work using fat32 format), after it's completed just drag and drop your media files to the external hard drive and connect to the dvd divx player thru usb. your dvd player should recognize the hard drive as a removable thumb drive, just pick a media file and play. (just make sure you read your dvd manual, some dvd players only play certain media files)
the dvd player is a coby dvd-277 divx player, hdd caddy by i/o magic

Good luck!

sounds cool.

hope you don't want to use that drive to store anything else (files over 4 gigs won't write to it, or will crash it... i.e. DVD .iso).

This is a really cool alternative for people who have these DVD players. I still have my XBOX, so it works great for me (access my Samba server, nothing beats it!). I wish MS would add Samba server support and Divx to the XBOX 360. This streaming from a Media Center PC or Vista is BS!

360 supports Divx now. I don't have Media Center but you can use Media Player 11 to set up media sharing. Definitely not as flexible as XBOX Media Center, which I use in my office.

Great tip. I use XBMC to stream everything from the pc or use a 2GB usb drive when the pc is shut down. Just wondering if having the HDD in usb would also be readable on on XBMC? I've hooked up my PSP and in the wiki they tried cameras but no HDD. Currently have an xbox on my bedroom and planning to get another one for the living room tv.

Maybe no problem, I'm not saying it is hard or anything. I'm saying it is a stupid implementation. Instead of handling it with basic network protocols, they went for this streaming method that requires software on either end that performs special tasks.

My XBOX just connects to my network, via Samba and I can navigate to anywhere and open up any file supported. The transfer protocol is fast and doesn't clog up my network. And when you have a house with 7 computers bouncing off the server 24/7 pulling files anywheres from 5 megs to 5 gigs... this is a plus! (the server is only 10/100).

The 360 dogs down trying to pull an MPEG-2 file if someone is just listening to .mp3's off the server in another room. That and it has to pull the MPEG-2 off my bedroom computer where I have Windows. My server is Linux, so 360 won't even look at it... though I store ALL my movies, songs, videogames, everything there... so anyone can use any of it at anytime from one central point.
