Replacing N64 controllers.

Post by vlame »
The analog stick was prone to some long-term reliability issues. If used excessively, the stick became "flaccid", which means that it will not return to center position. Instead, it "droops" off to one side. This can be caused by rotating it intensively with the palm of the hand (common practice in games like Mario Party, in which it gives advantages in some mini-games). If not played enough, the stick could become hard to move.

Should any of this happen to the analog stick, gameplay may become more difficult. In The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time, for example, a "flaccid stick" makes it impossible for the player to run forward, in turn preventing the player from winning some mini-games, such as racing the ghost of the gravekeeper, making it impossible to complete the game.
This happened to me. Banjo just keeps walking.... anybody have a fix or possibly a good 3rd party brand that has stronger sticks?

In teh instruction booklet for your system it says to not touch the analog stick when you turn on your machine or launch a game as the system registers where the center position of the analog stick is. So if you turn it on and it is jammed to the right...uh oh. (been a long long time since I used my N64 and cant remember if that is true or not)

If it is true then can you not hold the stick in the center as you turn the machine/game on so it registers that as the center?.

you can reset the position by leaving the stick in "neutral" and pressing L+R+Start too

wouldn't it just continue to go bad if the stick is limp?

No, you physically make sure the stick is in neutral or the center (with your thumb) as you do that. It just means that due to a 'limp' analog stick you have to play with your thumb always holding it in position....otherwise, if your thumb leaves it, it falls into the 'limp' position and the onscreen character (say Mario in Mario 64) will start walking on his own. A small inconvenience but perfectly playable.

Or you could get a brand new Yobo pad, they make the 2 in one nintendos and a bunch of other parts for old systems, i got an N64 Ram and replacement controller from them and they are of good quality. I find the yobo controllers much more comfortable though.
