So I'm getting a Retron 5 and I'd like some opinions from the folks around here who have more knowledge than I.
My main question is what rpg should I get first? I'm mainly leaning towards Star Ocean, Tales of Phantasia, or Seiken Densetsu 3 to get first.
Another question is there a patch for a Japanese terranigma to english?

Re: Super Famicom Games
I don't think there is. I'm sure you could generate a patch that would change it to the European release, perhaps even with the updated font from RHDN.
Speaking of which, if a patch isn't there, it might not exist. At least for SFC stuff.
Those three are good ones to start with for sure. Depending on your budget, you might also be interested in stuff like Rudra no Hihou, Mystic Ark, or Front Mission: Gun Hazard.

I'm sure me bringing this one up will get a snicker, but Sailor Moon Another Story was translated back in the later 90s and oddly it's a really good little RPG worth playing. Yes it's tied to what was established to start as a girls leaning anime/manga series but oddly to the writers surprise back then even amounts of guys got into it too for whatever reason. Having got bored(stuck) watching it air on TV back in the day before school I got used to it, then ended up reading the books, so I tried it out and it was surprisingly good and I'll say it doesn't need any previous history to make any more or less sense or enjoyable. It's not a cakewalk either but it's not one of the harder RPGs you'll play as well.
Re: Super Famicom Games
No snickering here, I put a lot of time into that game. It's actually a rock-solid RPG. Wonder if I've still got that old save game somewhere?

Man that sucks about the patch on Terranigma. Is there any opinion on Star Ocean Vs Tales of Phantasia? Like which one is better, because I've often heard they are very similar games.
Also thanks for the suggestions, I'm gonna look at some youtube videos on a few of those mentioned

Tales for sure. I find Star Ocean's battle system pretty button-mashy. If you want to play Star Ocean, I'd go with the PSP remake.
Also, the story behind Star Ocean is pretty fascinating.

Re: Super Famicom Games
That is a hell of a story behind it. Shame about the combat and lack of polish, cause the game looks fantastic in screen shots. Not enough scifi jrpgs. I'll probably just get tales first and sometime down the line I'll get star ocean.
Re: Super Famicom Games
I enjoyed the fuck out of Star Ocean on the SNES. I say go for it!
For Terranigma, just create a patch out of the PAL version like Sarge said. Just be sure to patch the PAL version with this first...

Re: Super Famicom Games
ROMs can be patched with another ROM.
So, for instance, you can get a Japanese Terranigma and patch it with the PAL version. You can also get cheaper Japanese versions of games like E.V.O. and EarthBound and patch them with the North American ROM. This is done with LunarIPS. The JPN->PAL Terranigma one is already widely circulated. Check the first page of the Retron 5 thread for the link.
If we're talkin' RPGs I'd also like to recommend Alcahest, Bahamut Lagoon, Der Langrisser, Emerald Dragon, Final Fantasy V, Front Mission, Live A Live, Neugier: Umi to Kaze no Kodo, Treasure Hunter G, and Wonder Project J.
