Android dungeon crawlers, roguelikes, and WRPGs.

There've been some nice Android threads lately, a fact I enjoy as I'm a fan of the platform. Smartphone gaming has certainly come a long way in the past few years, and it's good enough now, that even a stubborn ol' curmudgeon like me finds some Android experiences of equal merit to dedicated handhelds. There are of course many genres of games available for Android, but the ones I find myself spending the most time with are dungeon crawlers, roguelikes, and WRPGs. I don't know why that is, I guess I find them the most rewarding in short bursts. So in that regard, I'm going to take some time here to talk about choice games I enjoy in those genres on this platform.

To save load times I'll just post screenshots for random entries. Check the links if you want to see screenshots for any one particular game.

damn, nice first post. Like you, I love these Android threads as tablets have become my handheld of choice over the past few years.

Also, thanks for pointing out some mobile VR stuff. Even though I have a Rift, I sometimes feel guilty for neglecting my GearVR.

As much as I love my 3DS and Vita (and I do), smartphone gaming has gotten so good that I don't even care if there's successors to either handheld. Never thought I'd see myself type that, but it's true nonetheless. :o

Meaty very meaty post with lots of choice. I have questlord and before that shattered pixel game of some variant it. I guess it's too corporate for the list but Baldurs Gate 1 and 2 (icewind dale maybe too?) are on the WRPG list of goodies for Android as well.

Great thread!

There really is some good stuff out there for mobile systems. The problem is sorting through all the trash to get to the good stuff. A thread like this is just what we need for easy reference!
Have: Sega Genesis, SNES, Atari 2600, Atari 7800, Atari 800XL, PC, N3DS XL, Wii U, GBA, Xbox One, Switch

Want: Games!!!

If I have one complaint about Android gaming, it's that the Google Play store is trash insofar as browsing it usefully is concerned. It needs a far better filtering system, but Google won't do that, for reasons which all boil down to $$$.

If you guys are interested in other genres let me know, I might have some goodies for ya.

I've always hated the ambiguity of release dates of mobile games. Basically, all you know is when a game was last updated. So when you look at "new games" (or rather "new and recently updated") you really aren't seeing new games as much as you are seeing recently updated games. It makes it tough to keep up with genuinely NEW releases.

Y'know, you look at something like Steam - PC games get updates all the time, but you can clearly read what the original release date was on those games.

Looking at the Play Store right now, I'm shown Angry Birds 2 (that's not new, right?), Fire Emblem Heroes (that is new), two different Walking Dead games (probably not new), Rayman Adventures (I actually have no idea), Lego Batman (totally not new), Bethesda Pinball (this one is new), among a bunch of really generic nondescript looking games with titles such as "Cooking" and "Monster."

Seriously, the Play Store is a mess.

Depends on the Lego Batman. :) If it's based on a movie, that just came out.

Either way though I agree, end up having to use Pocket Gamer a UK site that covers any form of handheld gaming (Nintendo, Sony, Android, iOS, etc things.) Great for reviews, break down of IAP usage in titles (if it's fair, abusive, a whale, etc), previews, weekly best releases, freebies, and other junk.

I think something that could be done is more lists like this covering popular genres. One could be solid arcade conversions as mobile gaming usually is a faster play pick up and play thing, which is what a quarter muncher is good for. Another could be on the flip, console conversions but that could get overlap (Bard's Tale, Soul Calibur.) One you don't see much of but I hear are nice on there are flight sims (anything from space to wannabe real sims) and not just planes but choppers, gliders, whatever. Given the nature of the site, popular emulators might be a welcome one too if you can give a gist of compatibility and system reqs to be right on what it's emulating.
