Just got Brawl. It's Horrible!
My brother and his friend went to a smash bros. Tournement tonight at Gamestop and brought home the game. I got my first chance to play and... it's all style and no substance. I love SSBM, and I'm not one of those "I hate brawl because they took out wave-dashing" guys, but man, they just ruined the whole experience.
The gameplay is incredibly hectic, but the gravity is very low, so forget smash attacks. And your characters' B moves? If you can tell what you're doing, they maybe, and that's a big maybe, help you win a round. But the game is so fentic compared to SSBM that not only can you not tell what's going on, but what you're doing.
You'll be in a match, you run at somebody, they pick up a tiny object on the ground (by accident) and throw it at you (by accident) resulting in a random explosion that kills both of you. And this happens dozens of times a match, because not only is the gameplay itself totally broken, but the backgrounds have uniqe ways of killing you without you expecting it.
Take the Ice Climbers level. The peak of a bountain breaks off and you slide down hill. Nice effect Nintendo, but when the futile efforts to hold your baloon-like floaty character on the slippery ice stage begin to frustrate the player, maybe it needs to be toned down. For me, I made it to the bottom of the mountain, but when I stood on a part of the stage that was shin deep with water, A fish swam up and ate me.
I did win a match though, but I didn't know untill it told me I did, because everything was so frantic, I had assumed I had been owned. It's that bad.
I had high hopes for this game, but its just terrible. If the rest of you buy it and love it, well, forget me. But please consider the fact that this game is NOT Super Smash Brothers.

That's how I feel about all the Smash Bros. games. If you took the core game, replaced it with a bunch of other characters and stripped Nintendo's name off the box, no one would bat an eyelid. It's just a fan service game. The Apprentice wrote:I got my first chance to play and... it's all style and no substance.

I wouldn't take it to that extreme. The second game is good. This one was like- "How do we take it to the next level? How about we make a horrid mess that looks and sounds epic and trick the gamers into thinking they're playing? Sounds great!"

I love fighters, and I love Nintendo (Mario and Kirby in one game...
) but for some reason have never gotten into any iteration of Smash Brothers. It does seem rather hectic and button-mashy, but it begs me to love it!!! Oh well, I'll be picking up House of the Dead 2 and 3 Return on Tuesday so I will get my fix...
I don't hear anyone else bitching. Japanese version has been out for a while and aside from newfound glitches, everyone seems to think it's an upgrade. The strange thing is, I clearly remember everyone crying like babies when Melee came out and changed everything. 6 months later, anyone who was sticking with the N64 iteration was a moron.

^suffice to say all of the people that have bought it would be dedicated Nintendo fans.
Thats quite an interesting idea. I would be totally interested to see how that would sell.Flak Beard wrote:If you took the core game, replaced it with a bunch of other characters and stripped Nintendo's name off the box, no one would bat an eyelid. It's just a fan service game.

There have been several in Japan - Dream Mix TV World Fighters and the One Piece game for the PSX both come to mind. None have made it very far sales or acceptance wise. The only reason Dream Mix is known is because it is like Smash Bros but you can play as G1 Optimus and Megatron. So I an inclined to agree with you (atleast partially) Flak Beard.
I will still be picking up Brawl even if it is a bad game. I played the N64 and Gamecube versions in tournaments around the US, but eventually gave up and laid it down just for friendly matches. I actually played my first game in maybe two years two weeks ago and had a blast. Brawl will be alittle different. Gone are those days of highschool and college where I can devout 10+ hours to gaming a day some days, also gone are those friends who would join me for that. While there is online gameplay, I will be hard pressed for that since those friends are around the world. Brawl will be the pull it out for a laugh game, not the competition game of choice. Because even if it is awful, it will let me play as a R.O.B. and allow me to beat up heroes of childhood gaming.

Are you talking just with the Wiimote, or will "classic" controls as well?abeisgreat wrote:I just got brawl today and I hate it aswell. The controls are clunky, the tiny characters are hard to follow on a small screen. Its just an overall bad experience.
