Forza Horizon 3 PC is a disaster!

Post by jay_red »

I excitedly downloaded this, very happy that MS brought the Forza series to PC, and after being pretty impressed with how Apex felt after wheel support was patched in, thought I would be in for a night of racing. My problems started with the splash screen crash, researched for 15 minutes and finally found a mix of fixes that got me into a game. I tried it on my main gaming PC and not my racing setup PC first, to see how nice it looks. I finish the first race and the game crashes when I get to the map to set a way point.

Frustrated I open it on my racing setup to play with my G27, Apex supported this wheel just fine and had no issues. First I have a hell of a time figuring out what random buttons it wanted to use for navigation. Once I get that kinda sorted out, I realize it does not recognize that I even have a G27, it just wants the default profile. I figure I will try it out anyway, and the wheel is lifeless, no FFB, and I have to turn the wheel a full 90 degrees to even get the car to react. This was the last straw, I turned off the PC and am seriously considering pursuing a refund of this game. All my other racing games work just fine, even MS's own Forza Apex. How they messed up this release is beyond me, and while I was excited to be getting Xbone games on my PC, firmly giving me no reason to have to buy that console, I dont think I will buy any of their other releases. I dont care if "They are working on a patch", the game is way too broken as is to have been released, and they do not deserve my money.

That's pretty bad, you think it's possible it had some intent behind releasing it like that not just because they knew it was buggy but to maybe get reviews online driving people to buy a console to buy it? They did that with the original Halo on PC, and conveniently years later when Halo 2 came out finally patched the bugs out causing framerate instability and crashes. Or is this another case of a console game maker releasing a beta with massive 'patches' to come as it's easier to use paid guinea pigs?

no.

I think there are lots of known issues that they are aware of/working on:

Like it or not, buying new PC games on day one often comes with issues and needing to spend some time waiting for fixes. This isn't exclusive to Forza.

I am no stranger to pc games, and dealing with buggy releases and workarounds (I am exclusively PC this generation so far) but the issues many of us are having is inexcusable. I was fine with all the quirks until my wheel was not recognized, even though it is one of the most commonly used wheels on pc, and has a profile in the damn game.

I foolishly thought that since they had all this worked out in Forza 6 apex, that it would carry over to this game and it would be a smooth experience. I spent over an hour last night with their support chat trying to get a refund, but they said they can't find my transaction, even after I provided them the transaction id from Microsoft. This whole experience is the worst I have had with a pc game, I wish this were like steam with a easily accessible refund policy.

I can't even get Forza 6 Apex because the Windows 10 App Store can't properly determine my system specs. I don't have x64! (I do) I don't have enough RAM! (I do) I don't have enough VRAM! (I do, damn you!)

The store is borked badly.

This is the source of everyone's problems, methinks.

Just to provide a different point of view...

I purchased and installed Forza Horizon 3 on my PC yesterday (which also gives me access to the game on Xbox One, w00t!). It installed with no issues, runs flawlessly at 60FPS with everything at max settings, and is arguably the most beautiful racing game I have ever played. No crashes, glitches, or bugs to be found thus far. I intend to try it out with an older wheel later today, so will report back on that.

jay_red, maybe the issues that concerned you or the problems you ran into have been ironed out since launch?
