so tell me about the PS Vita

Post by s8n »

hi guys , so i've seen the HENkaku hack on Eurasia and it interests me.

https://henkaku.xyz/

i don't have a Vita and was wondering about the build quality and the differences in models as in some models are shite etc. Also who thinks this hack could turn into a ISO loader or there's no chance.

The Vita will undoubtedly get PSP-level CFW before too long. As for the build quality, I have the original model because the screen is MUCH better, and it's a very solid, quality feeling handheld. The original model used an OLED screen whereas the slim used a cheap LCD screen. It still looks good, but you can't beat OLED for screen quality. I can't speak to battery life between the two or the model 2's build quality since I've never had one, but for the screen alone, if you're going to get one, get an original model. The Vita's only real drawback is that the wireless antenna is shit and will struggle to pick up a wifi signal from two rooms away.

I think. There were only the two models IIRC. Exhuminator is real Vita expert around here. He's the one who converted me.

The Vita is awesome, I've had one since 2013. I own nearly 50 physical games for the thing, with a still want to buy list that consists of ~20 titles. But the Vita's library can be broken down into three segments...

The initial Vita launch titles... a wide variety of stuff, much of it first party Sony developed. This is when Sony was still trying to prove the Vita was a handheld console capable of AAA quality games (see Killzone, Wipeout, Uncharted, et al). Sony proved it, but nobody cared. Mainly because memory cards were so damned expensive for the thing.

Then the ecchi wave started. There are many, many ecchi infused games localized and available in physical format for the Vita. Most of them are JRPGs, DRPGs, and VNs. I am a fan of these kinds of games, and I enjoy collecting them for my Vita. I don't think there's ever been a domestic system with this level of localized ecchi-weeb games before. It's a first, and it'll probably be a last. So I'm getting this stuff while I can.

That said, most people who own Vitas in the west simply play ports of indie games on them. I'm talking about stuff like Minecraft, Retro City Rampage, Spelunky, and stuff in that vein. Games that you could easily just play on a laptop or a tablet, but folks enjoy them on Vita because it has great controls and an amazing screen. Well, it does if you have an OLED model anyway.

So that leads us to the one sticking point IN MY OPINION. If you buy a Vita, get the OLED model. The OLED looks AMAZING. And I say this as someone who's seen two Vitas in real life playing the same game, one with an OLED and the other an LCD. I don't think there was any comparison, the OLED kicked the shit out of the LCD. But that's just my opinion, plenty of people say there's barely any difference and it's no big deal. I'll let you be the judge of that.

I think the Vita is the best handheld ever made, I love the thing so much. It's just a pure joy to game on, with the awesome screen and fantastic physical control setup. There's only two problems I have with it, and I can explain what those problems are if you really want to know. But it's no big deal.

Do I think the Vita will someday be cracked wide open like the PSP? I think that's highly likely yes. I don't particularly care either way, as the thing is region free and I can afford to buy real games for the thing personally. Outside the piracy aspect, I guess people could do some cool homebrew with it or whatever.

If there are any specific questions about the Vita just ask.

I think the slim has a better battery and more comfortable but most developers even suggest the OLED model.

I'm soley a PSTV guy, handhelds were rarely appealing to me. 3x have I bought some through the ages. GBA I did and loved it, PSP 3000 and Vita all lasted shortly with me under a year GBA slightly longer.

You've just given me three very good reasons not to get a Vita. I can definitely skip the research now. Cheers.

I think the LCD looks fine. I've seen the OLED in person, and while there are certainly differences, it's not enough for me to really need the older model.

I like the system, I just wish there were more games on there that catered to my tastes. Some of the early stuff is nice, because it was a good mix of great games. I don't have interest in all the ecchi games, so it doesn't help me on that front. And the indie stuff I usually have elsewhere, although it is a great platform for those.

I'd also point out that, for the PSX games supported, it makes for a great portable to play them on. It certainly looks a lot better than they do on the PSP.

Very good point, I forgot about that.

I also want to mention, there are a fair amount of JRPGs for the Vita that aren't ecchi-centric. Especially action-RPGs. If you're a fan of that genre check out the Vita. A few off the top of my head:

Odin Sphere Leifthrasir
Ys: Memories of Celceta
Muramasa Rebirth
The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel
Soul Sacrifice
Tales of Hearts R
Sword Art Online: Lost Song
Freedom Wars
Ragnarok Odyssey ACE
Dungeon Hunter: Alliance (not JRPG, but is action-RPG)
Valhalla Knights 3
