PS2 (70012)Laser Assembly Replacement Problems

Post by r3robbie »

Hey there fellow ps2/retro fans,

I was wondering if you could give me a spot of help regarding the replacement of an SCPH-70012's disc laser assembly.

Quite a while ago I'd already submitted a post asking for diagnostic help, as my ps2 was scratching discs, and it was decided that replacing the whole deck would be the best course of action (for context see this post). After finally having enough money to actually justify purchasing a $30 laser deck, I've run into a few problems with installation. I've already made a post over on /r/ps2 so I'll just copy that to here:

There are two major problems I'm having:

1.) I just can't seem to release the ribbon lock on the back of the unit, which at the moment, is the only connection still tied to the mobo itself.
The guide I followed just removed the cable entirely, including the tape that normally prevents the ribbon from damaging discs. I obviously don't want to have to do this, since a) I don't have a replacement cable, & b) that'll just open up a whole new set of possible problems. Any ideas? Normally I'd consult RPSXP for help, (since I purchased this deck from them, and seemed to have a good support record) but after a week and two emails with no response, it seems I'm SOL in that department.

2.) The deck itself isn't an exact replacement.
Take a look - my deck is on the left, the one I purchased is on the right. Is it still safe/compatible to install this replacement? The product page stated this drive would be compatible for my system.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
