Uber vs Yellow Cab

Uber vs Taxi
Uber just announce today cross border transportation service to Mexico here in California. Yellow Cab and other Taxi companies have really been taking a beating. Even in New York where Yellow Cab is synonymous with the Big Apple, Uber has taken a huge market share.

I prefer a Taxi company which I think has some kind of control with the driver hired IN PERSON and the fleet of commercial vehicles inspected by their mechanics. Not sure if Uber has this kind of checks and balances after seeing the Uber horror stories in the news.

Then again if you go to New York, amazing the huge range of quality of the Yellow Cabs. I have ridden Yellow Cabs brand new and others that looked like the driver lived out of the car. First time I took my family to NY (plane arrived late at night), the driver had to move plastic bags of clothes and car parts out of the way to make room for our luggage. My wife whispered to me if we should go to back to the taxi pick line and I remarked "Hey its New York!". The driver in the beat up car got us safe from JFK Airport to Manhattan and was courteous, tipped him well.

What is your take on this, which would you trust?

My understanding is that Uber doesn't do any checks and accepts no responsibility for what happens to you during your ride. They also have terrible radio commercials in my market and thus I will never give them my business.

I rarely take anything other than public transportation, but when I do need a ride, I flat out refuse to call Uber. We don't need more cars clogging the streets, I'd prefer my drivers be licensed and inspected, and there's no oversight if the driver decides to screw me over. Besides, for around the city, taxis are cheaper than Uber.

That said, the taxi service isn't the best, either. I'm hoping this will spark reform more than kill it off.

Taxi service in Atlanta is pretty abysmal, and some of the worst traffic violations I've witnessed here have been by taxis. I prefer driving myself. That said, with the planned MARTA expansion, I'm hoping that one day it will be feasible instead to rely on the train system.

My few experiences with Uber have been good, and I know a few friends (other teachers) who drive for Uber on weekends to help make ends meet, but I agree that the business model seems a bit...less than safe to me.

Taxis in London cost about 140% more than Uber.

I'll go for Uber, thanks.

My experience with Uber has overall been real fantastic actually. The exception being my first ride with an older dude from South Africa who was real real bad at driving and kind of scary. He only had 2 stars but I didn't know better. I complained after the ride, with just a single email, and got a refund and a free future ride. Nice.

You have the ability to deny shady drivers if you like. Depending on the number of drivers in your area it can be worth it to find one that looks good to you. Most of the Uber drivers I've talked to have been stay at home moms who became bored being just that or younger people trying to make a few extra bucks on the weekends so they can buy video games and beer.

Uber is also far cheaper but, I usually end up tipping the drivers a fuck ton. It's not required but it's not required in the way that tipping your servers at a restaurant in America isn't required. It still ends up being cheaper than any cabs in the places I've been.

I know some cab companies offer it to but, it's really nice that a group of 5 or 6 college students can request an UberXL for about the same price as a normal Uber and get escorted around in what tend to be gigantic black Caddilac Escalades. :)

All of my recent experiences with taxis were awful, expensive, and inconvenient. (The cab drivers in Charlotte also all drive like complete idiots; so, they make me mad even when I am not using them.). All of my experiences with Uber were fantastic. I will hopefully never take a taxi again.

I have only ridden a taxi once. I was too drunk to drive. The taxi driver was downright mean. He charged me seventeen dollars to drive me just a few miles. Then he says, "oh, and by the way, I don't make change". I handed him a twenty and never rode a taxi again.

I've never ridden uber, but I'm not so hot on the company. They seem like they're using creative language to end run around the taxi laws. Uber Drivers are "partners" not employees, so Uber doesn't pay payroll tax, insurance, et cetera. Also, Uber doesn't pay the drivers too well.

I can't help but get the feeling that the Uber company is a house of cards that will be eventually swept out of the way by a better, more responsible ride sharing service.
