my new MAME rig, and a question

The other day i remembered that I hadn't used mame in YEARS, so i said hey why not see what they've been up to

I took my MASsystems arcade stick, used a PS2->USB adaptor, and fired up some old favorites. After figuring out how to map the controls, I was having a blast, but the display on my laptop just wasnt cutting it. So i fired up a 19 inch VGA monitor to see how that would hold up- Looks too good. I know that sounds wierd, but the lines are just too sharp for this era of gaming.

then I remembered the jackpot- the S-video output on my laptop. So, i grab my CRT TV, hook it up S-Video, fire up MAME, and BAM! True arcade feel at home. Display is amazing but not overly sharp. It's really a sight to behold, but it brings me to a question;

does any one else feel mame looks WAY better on a TV than on a VGA monitor? edit: i think it has a lot to do with the fact that the refresh rate of the TV is 60hz, but the monitor i believe is 75ish... and also the obvious issue of dot pitch.

Actually- I know exactly what you're talking about. I used to have a 30" presentation display with VGA, RGB, S-video and Composite inputs. My input of choice when playing my favorite arcade games was often s-video because it felt more authentic.

I'm new to the MAME scene, and I'm dealing with this right now. My Macbook is just too small and I have a choice of HDTV or a bigger CRT. I think I would rather see it on the CRT through s-video.

Would there be lag if I tried playing on the HDTV?

as far as lag goes, it depends on the brand of HDTV and what interface/input you use. I'd say it probably wouldn't lag, but it's always a possibility. I'd definitely recommend the CRT with S-video if it's an option.

on another note i got my VGA monitor on 60hz and it helps smooth things over a little, but it's still just too sharp and jagged with diagonal lines.
