The "How is this game still cheap?" Thread
Myself and I think many others might be a little cynical when it comes to collecting games these days. The craze is definitely in full swing and it can be hard to pay reasonable prices for titles you legitimately want to play. I thought it'd be fun and maybe a little encouraging to people like me to name some games that really are solid titles and haven't experienced a big price hike. I submit a couple here that jump out at me:
Choplifter-This one can be had on most systems under or around $10. It's an arcade classic in my eyes. I would totally understand if this game jumped to about $20-30, but it seems to be settled in the "very affordable" range.
Batman NES-Obviously a pretty well known game for collectors, and a great option if you need a second helping of something like Ninja Gaiden. Continues to be around $12-15 in my experience. An NES must have in my opinion.
Are there any you always think of that you're surprised have stayed pretty low value-wise?

Well since they're the worst hit I'll stick to Nintendo.
NES-Faxanadu -- Sure the password system is terrible, but get beyond that you have a pretty solid and fun side scrolling adventure game. Good gear, nice magic spells, lots of items and keys, things to find and do. Solid graphics though earth tones and muted greatly, the audio accompanies it well. Easily had in the $5-10 range, even the manual doesn't add much if anything (box, probably but not much I'd guess.)
NES-Crystalis -- As if it needs explaining, it kind of out Zelda'd Zelda. Solid overhead adventure with leveling up mechanics and some nice gear to find or buy. Seems to sit for years in the $10-15 range. Came out in 1990, even a complete copy won't set you back more than $30-50, at or below retail 25 years ago. A solid game yet oddly commands little.
NES-Super Spy HUnter -- I think it's a US renamed sequel to the old arcade Spy Hunter, either way it's an amazing sunsoft vertical car based shooter. This time it has insane use of color, crazy graphics that warp and move on the screen, good spread of weapons and enemies, large moving platforms, and bosses. A $10-20 game if you use your smarts for the cart, came out in 1992 after the SNES, a good post-SNES game that still isn't getting up there.

Dragon Spirit for NES is a big one for me. That was one of my favorite games growing up, and it's still one of my favorite shmups on the NES. That seems to go for less than $5 online these days.

On the nes there are 3 that really stick out in my mind: Adventure of Lolo, Gradius, and Star Tropics can all be had for $10 and under.
They are action puzzle, shmup, and top down adventure genres respectively.

The NES Brøderbund games come to mind. The Guardian Legend, Legacy of the Wizard, Deadly Towers, The Battle of Olympus......
Lotsa really cheap and tasty prices once you start looking at imports.

Deadly Towers get a lot of shit online, I've noticed, but I really enjoyed that game. I have Legacy of the Wizard, but I haven't played it yet.

Most of the Genesis/Mega Drive library falls into this category! This is especially true if you are willing to accept loose carts.
Sure, there are a few standouts that demand high prices but it's nothing like the SNES market these days. A lot of the most popular (and best) titles can be had well under $20 USD. Raise the cap to $25 per game and you have 95-99% of the library covered.
Also, the Genesis is one of the few systems where you can still find sellers in the wild who haven't looked up the games on ebay. About a year ago, I got TMNT Hyperzone Heist loose for $5 at a booth in one of those faux-antique marts. I also scored a boxed copy of Gaiares for $10 a few months ago at a permanent flea market booth when we were visiting friends on the other side of the state.
Genesis collecting is where it's at.

Upon a lot of recommendations I snagged a copy of The Guardian Legend. Is it bad that I simply prefer to play Blaster Master? I didn't get that far though to be honest. I have to remember to go online and read the manual for some of these games to fully understand what I'm doing instead of assuming it'll be easy to grasp 100%.
If you ever feel like rattling off some good, affordable imports I'd certainly be interested. I don't have very much knowledge of non-US NES releases.
