The first Voodoo was an addon card, it had 4MB of memory and cost $300. I almost never spend more than that on any videocard.. or console 
Luckily you can have quite nice performance on a reasonable budget, unless you're shooting for 4K. The 980 Ti is a nice piece of kit, and isn't hampered like the 970's segmented VRAM architecture.
