PSA for any Windows 10 users. As soon as you dtart the game, disable softshadows and frame buffering in the video options. If these options are active, it will crash your game as soon as you load a save or start the prologue.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

If you're trying to powergame KOTOR, don't level up your main character past 4 until the part that you definitely want to start leveling up again (you'll know it when you get there).

Posted this in the comments on the web version:

And if you don't want to play the game, but you do want to witness it, and don't mind a lot of humorous nattering going on, check out this season of Spoiler Warning on YouTube. They are about 2/3 to 3/4 through KOTOR.

And Josh doesn't quite get to play as blatantly "chaotic stupid" as he normally prefers.

I don't think its an exaggeration to say that KOTOR saved Star Wars for me. After being underwhelmed by Episode 1 and barely making it through Episode 2 I was pretty much done with anything new that the franchise produced. I'd never been a huge Star Wars fan to begin with though all of my friends were so my tolerance was pretty low. I never even saw Revenge of the Sith in its entirety until this year.

When KOTOR came out my friends were really raving about it and I asked if it took place during the original trilogy, they said no so I instantly wrote their opinions off since they also told me Episode 2 was amazing (until their desperation for it to be good wore off).

I don't know what eventually compelled me to play it. I pirated it one day and started playing and to my surprise it felt like Star Wars. Bioware really got it and I'd only grow more impressed with how well they got it the more I learned about the Expanded Universe (which I almost wish I hadn't since it's dead now). Star Wars went from something I was about to stop caring about to a universe I wanted to learn more about.

That said the gameplay has aged quite a bit and I never really cared for the combat system in the first place though part of that might be due to my general standoff-ishness with RPGs.

I've been kind of holding off on playing the PC version since KOTOR2 got a nice patch recently, I'm hoping KOTOR1 gets that treatment as well. I've actually never played the first one.

I have played this game about 6 times... gave up for whatever reason and started over. I never got much farther than the spot where you, as Popo stated, powerlevel. Until now.

I started last week (right before Christmas) on the XBOX since I don't have much time to sink into RPGs once school is back in.

Here is my progress:
I am 13 hrs in and in the middle of the Sand People quest on Tatooine. I was a level 3 scoundrel and stayed that way until I became a Jedi Guardian.
There is not much in the way of story thusfar, mostly sidequests - but the sidequests are interesting and the game is getting more fun every planet/level I go through.

This is funny and rather ironic.

The next game in my XBOX queue is KOTOR. So, after I finish up playing Max Payne, which should be in the next couple of days, I will be playing KOTOR.

I've heard nothing but praise for this game and it is one of the reasons that I picked up an original XBOX. I've also heard that it is incredibly long, so I don't know if I'll beat it in time.

But, this is my very first Together Retro that I'll be participating in! :D

Welcome to the club! I am notorious for writing articles for our selections and then not participating at all but this month, I am all in!

...It helps that I have a half finished save file.

I am definitely trudging through this game this playthrough. In the past, I have always opted for the Soldier and then the Soldier version of the upgraded class. This time I went high charisma, high intelligence, scoundrel...and I hate life. I get my ass kicked all the time. I am going to finish this game but it's definitely the least enjoyable run I've had.

KOTOR1 hasn't had much aftermarket support since it shipped in a pretty good state. KOTOR2, on the other hand, had a lot of very noticeable cut content and that was the first thing people tried to mod (that and allowing a female PC to recruit Handmaiden because her replacement is a tosser). Then the stuff like widescreen mods followed. There wasn't really much drive for KOTOR1 for that sort of stuff, so I wouldn't wait for it.

The only time I wouldn't go soldier is if I was creating a full caster Jedi. And that you only want to do if you're going dark side in KOTOR1, since KOTOR1 lacks offensive options for a light side caster. KOTOR2 fixes that.
