Steam Controller

Post by ElkinFencer10 »

Has anyone used the Steam controller and can give a recommendation? I've thought about getting one for my PC gaming (I'm really 50/50 on whether I use a gamepad or a mouse and keyboard depending on the game), and I've been using my Xbox One controller, but the Steam controller looks nifty. Should I go with a Steam controller or keep using my Xbox One controller?

The couple of people I know that have used it say it's awful while the Xbox One controller is fine enough.

I would save the money or buy a Saturn pad instead

I thought this was a good review for the controller:

The overly abundant presets situation may be a case of Schwartz's paradox.

Thanks for posting that. That pretty much made up my mind for me. I'm going to stick with my Xbox One controller for now and maybe pick up a Steam controller when they're cheaper and have better configured presets for games.

Games that require the mouse are best played with a mouse.. Platformers, fighting games and scrolling shooters are best played with a pad or stick.

If they required a mouse, I wouldn't be given the option of a gamepad. That's kind of the definition of the word "require"

I read somewhere that some people can play RTS games using this pad. I think Valve are trying a bit too hard to get into the hardware landscape, without much success. They've become even lazier than Blizzard at making games, a worrying trend.

I've been using mine since October, and I love it. Its a great option for me because with some tweaking its pretty much a one-stop solution for couch gaming. All the different options are crazy, especially for 3D game emulation (PS1+), or modern games. I can confirm that it' great for just about any game, including RTS games (I play Shogun 2, Cities: Skylines, and Civ 5), but racers are my favorite with the paddle-like grip buttons and motion control. Retro games and especially fighters would be better off with a stick or a Sega (don't hate on the Genesis!) pad.

It's also more solid than the 360 and I like the larger size over the XB1 pad, but that's just me. If you do a lot on the PC from the couch and don't already own a current gen console I say go for it.

Just got one yesterday to go with the Steam Link I got for Christmas. It is pretty strange feeling, gonna take some use to get used to it.
