Rise of the Tomb Raider - XBox 360 - Should you buy or wait?

Post by artphotodude »

If one doesn't have a PC able to run it right, or an XBox One, how does the 360 version stack-up? This being a 'first impressions' kind of post, please take it as such.
••Note this is ONLY talking about graphics. Gameplay is BAD TO THE BONE!!! And you would be stupid to wait a year to enjoy this kind of fun, over the minor complaints to follow!

The frame-rate, so far, is very stable and the texture quality is among the BEST I've ever seen on 360. Terrific color - maybe even a bit nicer than the Xbox One version that de-saturates colors as brightness goes up (the way real light works, but screw real, this is a game! ;0)
Aliasing is also very well controlled - better than even Farcry 4.

Sadly, the visual quality jumps-around a bit. The environments are complex and whenever Lara gets a ways away, the details on her face flatten-out. This wouldn't be noticeable accept that when the camera is zoomed-in, there is more detail on her face than her entire body had in the previous game. So occasionally, there is a bit of a jump that is somewhat more than ideal. Lastly, the shadows are the old-school twitchy kind from games like Tomb Raider: Legend.

Overall - Very Positive Experience!
The game, make no mistake, is JAW-DROPPING at times (possibly the best graphics of the 360's career). But it lacks the consistency from the previous game that kind of makes you forget it is a game. After 20 minutes or so, I stopped noticing and just starting having a GREAT TIME playing the 360's last 'Must Have' title, and I suspect most of you will too. But if you want the seamless-experience of the previous game, it might be worth waiting for a next gen version.
