Important Changes

Post by Ack »

Hi folks,

Ack here, representing the moderators for an update on some stuff. As you may have noticed, we've had some drama lately concerning the state of the forum, certain members' behavior, and claims that the moderator team are running a secret cell of the Illuminati and quietly monitoring all of your behavior in a dastardly plan to worship the all-seeing eye.

Well, first things first. After much deliberation, Luke has been banned. We moderators prefer to treat people like adults and offer them many chances to improve their behavior; people just have a bad day from time to time, problems can usually be worked out amicably, and we really don't want to see good members tossed out because they vented in the wrong way. Unfortunately this doesn't always work because some people either think they are above reproach or simply have no concept of the feelings of others.

In this particular case, considering the history of the member involved, we went back and reviewed previous incidents from the last few years. Many of the mods had at some point been on friendly terms with him, though in recent years he seemed interested in prolonged conflict with individual moderators, sometimes going back to arguments months after the fact. Removing ourselves from the equation however, there was a history of abuse that we could not deny, particularly after a significant medical event which occurred several years ago:

*Complaints in 2013 that led the moderators to tell him to lay low and cool off for several days.
*Numerous PMs from moderators telling him to relax and not take his personal problems out on others.
*An argument in 2014 that resulted in the moderators temporarily banning him for two weeks.
*A warning over personal insults and attacks in 2015, which was then followed by further insults and harassing behavior.

During this period of deliberation, the moderators were also contacted by current and previous website contributors, members on hiatus, and members who have officially left the forums to complain about his behavior(and in some cases suggest that his behavior was part of why members left or were taking breaks). It was determined that, while many of us had been on friendly terms with Luke, he had become a detriment and the website as a whole was better off parting ways with him.

Now Luke had become a fixture here, and he may have intended to leave after the auction. But we felt we needed to act or we would be back where we were before. When we really laid it out and dug up the history we all looked at ourselves and asked, "Is there any other member that would have this extensive history of warnings, chill out, or take it easy PMs?" Unfortunately Luke made it clear to everyone in his recent posts that the chill out PMs were useless(his words). In the end, as the moderator team deliberated, he tied our hands for us; the choice became obvious to each and every one of us.

Out of respect for a long-standing member, Mike and Luke discussed the ban last night. Luke wasn't in full agreement but said he understood the moderators have to do what they think is best for the site. Mike chose to share Luke's closing statement:

Luke wrote:Thank you for sending some sort of message to the community for me. I want people to know that there are no hard feelings between me and to anyone on the site.

================================================

Now, we have other things to discuss:

First and foremost, the moderator team has decided we are tired of the mod-baiting. In the wake of this drama, two more members have received warnings for bad behavior. We expect you to be respectful of one another and to act like adults.

Second, I intend to write up a post later this week explaining the current state of the website, the challenges we face, our work to revitalize it, the ideas we have already begun implementing. Times are changing, and we need to be looking ahead. We also need your help though; Racketboy.com cannot continue without your support.

Thanks for using transparency and lettings us know what has been going on and what is going to happen in the future for the site. I for one will miss Luke, but understand the decision. I will continue to shove videogames into my mouth thanks to him.

Time to pour out a cold one.

Although some of his posts rubbed me the wrong way, I generally liked Luke. I will be sorry to see him go, but I appreciate Ack's efforts to inform us of the mod team's decision.

Also, I really like this site, and I want to see it continue. I am happy to help revitalize it in any way that I can, and after I change jobs at the end of the month, I should have more time to assist with creating new content.

EDIT: That said, you guys really need to go into my most recent thread and let me know ASAP whether I should start a 32X collection. I don't trust any other internet community with such an important decision!

Why not? Though you're going to be turning around to sell the whole thing on B/S/T the moment the disappointment sets in.

At any rate - in the spirit of transparency it is important that the community really offer us feedback on this issue and any others. We try very hard to balance being mods and members at the same time. It is amazing how often we are presented with possible conflicts of interest and our super secret forum cave is full of topics where we make sure that we are individually doing the right thing to foster this community.

But this perception that we are moderating too strictly, that there are double standards, or that we are stifling the community is something that has kind of taken us by surprise. We constantly see people praise the atmosphere of this community, how laid back and worthwhile the conversations are, and how high the trust factor in B/S/T is.

We take these as signs that we are doing a good job.

If there are problems that we don't experience as members, we cannot do anything about it as mods - so we need input and feedback to make sure that each and every one of you check in on the site whenever you're goofing on the net.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

The professionalism and transparency is appreciated.

Luke was a long standing member and an incredible resource on the topic of retro gaming. I hope he's able to find another avenue to pursue his interests.

I'm not a longtime commenter (although a longtime lurker), but I'll definitely miss having Luke around. He was funny, genuine, and could be counted upon to avoid sugar coating his opinions. I didn't always agree with his point of view, but he certainly had a compelling viewpoint more often than not. I'll miss his fashion advice (always taken with a grain of salt), his awesome cooking advice, and his descriptions of fun sounding gatherings which I enjoyed vicariously through his descriptions.

That being said, and based on some of his more recent posts, Luke seemed like he wasn't as happy here as he used to be (and even now I can hear Luke admonishing me for claiming to discern a strangers motivations based on their forum posts). I really, really wish him the best, and I hope to cross paths with him at some point in the future (however doubtful that may be :().

I also echo the sentiments of others to say that I appreciate the transparency in posting this news. Forum moderation and administration is often a thankless job that involves making tough decisions such as this. I'm glad to hear that the matter was handled with honesty and openness throughout. I think the forum staff here does a good job of creating a welcoming environment which fosters lively discussion. It sucks that we occasionally reach this sort of impasse, but such is the nature of the beast.

I am saddened to hear of Luke's parting from Racketboy, and understand the moderator's approach to deal with it civilly and responsibly. I did not care for some of the recent posts and found them to be concerning, though I didn't chime in or wish to add fuel to the fire. Whatever the reasons, I wish him well.

However, I believe Racketboy to be one of the most mature communities and somewhere I find much enjoyment reading through threads and discussing things with others. I believe some members might find some of the inside jokes or banter between more senior members to be exclusive, without our senior members intending to do so. However, I've never found myself outside looking in on a group. I hope that Racketboy continues to be an exciting channel for us to discuss games, past and present.

Thanks for the transparency and feedback, Moderators. You keep on keepin' on.

That sort of thing is something you'll see on every community of every size. Hell, the GOG forums are pretty big but there's a core of very active posters that have a series of inside jokes and rough banter that I wouldn't be welcome to join in on.

Thanks for explaining things I'll miss Luke he added a certain spice to the forum. After the issues recently I understand the decision and I appreciate how open the Moderation team is being about it.

As for the forum changes I'm looking forward to helping as much as I can :). This is a great community and I really look forward to being a part of it for a long time to come.

I really appreciate you went out of your way to be transparent about this, I think it's a very honorable thing to do and I respect that.

In some ways, I'll miss Luke. At his best he could be insightful, funny and compelling and I often enjoyed reading his posts. But he wasn't always at his best and often resorted to mean-spirited baiting, his recent comments about moderation or his fake naïveté regarding transexuality being the most recent examples.

I don't think I'm in a position to throw stones though, so I'll take the chance to apologize for anything I could have done. I know I can get carried away sometimes so I apologize for that.
