Anyone else bored with arena shooters?

Post by Pulsar_t »

Having recently tried R6: What's it called beta on UPlay, I didn't care enough for the game to justify a full RRP. Now pre-loading Battlefront 3, and from the few streams I've seen it looks to go the same way. Anyone else getting this arena FPS fatigue as of late? ie games that you run around the map popping people in the head or torso for points and hope your reactions are faster than the others'. Minimal teamwork and little variety in objectives, no truly emergent gameplay as like the newer PvP/PvE games either.

I don't even know what the hell we are talking about. R6? You mean "Explosive with or without contact with air"?

If you're bored of arena FPS, you could always try something completely different, like

I wouldn't call Rainbow Six or Star Wars Battlefront "arena shooters." That's more of a term I reserve for Quake and Unreal Tournament.

I would say most modern FPS games like Battlefront 3 and RB6S are better described as objective based shooters. Arena based shooters are what I consider to be almost exclusively PVP variations of Death Match and maybe CTF which rely heavily on twitch reflexes.

As for boredom I think that really stems from who you play with. I actually really like the BF style of open world games since you can pull some pretty cool crap if you actually put strategy into it especially if you are a good driver/pilot. Although I usually get burned out after a while since people are really predictable and without any regulars to rely on you can get annoyed by your teammates desire to waste lives/resources while giving you minimal back up.

The only Modern FPS I don't care for is Call of Duty because all the maps feel like a circle jerk with everyone just running laps looking for something to spray for 2 secs before getting sprayed in the face themselves.

Clearly you didn't play enough Half-Life deathmatch back in the day, because that pretty much describes it perfectly. And it's awesome.

I guess the culture kind of burned me out with CoD just as much as the game play. Family didn't get internet till 03 so I missed out on a lot of the older stuff. Really used to enjoy playing Unreal Tournament, Time Splitters, and Red Faction with bots on the PS2 though. When we did get internet I played the hell out of Halo CE on the PC.
