Is anyone using retro-bit Genesis controllers on a Retron 5? I'm getting oddly inconsistent results when I try to use them on mine.
I bought a Retron 5 the other day and it works fairly well, but I'm having trouble troubleshooting a problem with the 1P Genesis port. I picked up two wired, 6-button, retro-bit brand Genesis controllers (as I only had 3-button controllers and wanted to play Eternal Champions with my roommate) that both work fine in the 2P slot. Use them in the 1P slot and they're hitting random buttons and doing all sorts of weird crap. Both a Sega brand 3-button and a third party 3-button worked fine.
That all reeks of a bad port, something not liking 6-button controllers. No worries there, a quick exchange of the Retron 5 and its solved, right? Except I'm on my third Retron 5 and I'm getting the same results. I manage the store I bought it at so exchanges aren't a giant problem, but at the same time, I don't want to open half my stock to learn this is a design flaw that (oddly) only affects retro-bit controllers on the 1P slot.
I don't own a Sega brand 6-button to test against that and I'd rather not order a redundant 3rd controller when I just bought two other ones, especially if it's really just to test a port. It would save me a big headache and let me know if I've hit a pile of defective systems or not if someone could definitively say, "I've got retro-bit Genesis controllers and they work great," or "Retro-bit Genesis controllers didn't work right in the 1P slot for me, but Sega controllers worked fine."
Retron 5 retrobit Genesis controller compatibility?
Re: Retron 5 retrobit Genesis controller compatibility?
FWIW, Sega brand 6-button Genesis controllers aren't too expensive and you'd be much better off with one over a Retro-Bit controller in any case.
Re: Retron 5 retrobit Genesis controller compatibility?
Given, but it was all right in front of me and quite cheap. And to be fair, the Retrobit Genesis controllers are actually pretty decent, except for this Retron 5 business.
I did end up solving this, though. A friend let me borrow a Sega brand 6-button controller and it worked perfectly. So as it turns out, the Retrobit controllers are a fine option for 2P, but for some reason they don't work well by any means in the 1P slot. That makes no sense, but that's apparently the case given the evidence.
