My PS3 Hates The New Retron 5

Post by DeadPark »

i bought a retron 5 console the other day, and it is happily sitting next to my ps3. atleast i thought they were happy together. when i went to use the PS3 today, it refused to connect to the internet. As soon as i unplugged the retron and put it in the corner of the room, instant 100% wireless connection.

i tested it a few times, and yeah, the PS3 refused to get an internet connection if the retron was hooked up. even the laptop across the room refused to connect when the retron was plugged in.

has anyone else ever experienced this? or even some idea of how it might have happened?

That's odd I never had that happen with it blocking anything from the internet. I did have it on my cheap HDMI switcher box block the PS3 from working because the R5 (at least the first model never tried on v2) I'm guessnig was cheapily built and even off but plugged in likes to send out a signal which caused the PS3 to go black. Remove the R5, then the PS3 gets a signal to the TV which was really annoying so I had to keep the PS3 (now PS4) on the HDMI 2 port.

I'd bet it's the bluetooth for the controller that comes with it... is there anyway to disable that? Wifi and bluetooth use same 2.4g spectrum, bluetooth protocol was designed to avoid interference BUT cheap modules or poor drivers will make bluetooth cause huge interference with wifi.

Maybe you can buy 5ghz router with dd-wrt setup to connect to your main router over 5ghz, then run ethernet to ps3. Maybe $20-30 on auction sites... There are dedicated/out of the box solutions to do this but they tend to be more expensive ($50+).

i thought i must have something to do with the bluetooth controller, but i never knew bluetooth and wifi used the same spectrum, thank you for that information.

i emulate my games mostly, the retron 5 is just for testing games i buy for my collection. so leaving it unplugged when not in use isn't a huge problem. i just thought it was a very odd compatibility problem that i'd never encountered before.

Even v2 sends out a constant signal so if your using a switch box that autoselects you pretty much have to unplug the HDMI from the Retron anytime you want to use something else on the same switchbox.

WiFi signals aren't hard to disrupt. Try going into your router's settings and switching the channel. Channel 1, 6 or 11 are common suggestions. Change it to channel 11 and see what happens.

i changed it to 11 like you said, and that seems to have done it. thank you so much. now they are playing nicely together.
