In a neat coincidence, this is also the Game of the Month on the SNES subreddit

I bought this months back on Wii U VC ready for this month. Will be my first experience with this part of the Mega Man series.

I hear they basically have a downwards progression in terms of quality though.

X3 is definitely a step down, but X2 is a lot of fun. The level design isn't as polished, but the mid-air dash and the double-charge arm cannon are so much fun

It's a little more nuanced than that. The series actually continues on an upward trajectory for the first 4 games, with a debatable minor dip for X3.

X5 was intended to be the end of the series as it finished the storyline foreshadowed heavily in X2 and set up perfectly the Megaman Zero series that was already being planned and all of the story elements in the backstory for Megaman Legends.

Capcom being capcom (even in the late 90s) demanded more and started cranking out more X games independent of Inafune which ruined any semblance of a coherent lore and did not enjoy the heavy QA process that most of the previous games had. Essentially, for Megaman X-X3, they were able to speed development by re-using assets but they still did heavy amounts of testing. Megaman X5-X6 reused X4's assets but were sped through QA to meet sales deadlines and fell apart, especially in the area of localization for other regions.

Megaman X7 and X8 are hard to even consider part of the same game series. They have some merit but they feel utterly bizarre and detached from the core of what made the series what it is. Then you have two gameboy color games that are as alright and a pretty boring RPG.

But X1-X4 is nearly mandatory and X5 can be enjoyable if you take the time to understand the games' weaknesses and play around them.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Interesting that you think X2 and X4 are higher quality than the first, that's not an opinion I've heard often. I do hear mostly positive things about those games though.

I was mainly thinking of X5 onwards in my previous statement, although as I said, I'd heard that most people prefer the first to the second and that 4 might be the outlier in the progression downhill.

I do look forward to trying them though, and I don't want to write them off. I've enjoyed all the classic Mega Man games I've played too.

I've been saving my Zero playthrough of X5 for this.

One thing that still bothers me about the PSX X games is that the physics for wall jumping is slightly different from the SNES games. It's just different enough that you notice and it doesn't feel right.

True story time. Christmas of 1993:

My dad: "What do you want for Christmas?"

Me: "Mega Man X for Super Nintendo."

My dad: "Howabout a mountain bike instead?"

Me: "I want Mega Man X."

My dad: "You'd rather have a damn video game than a new mountain bike?"

Me: "Yes."

So I got Mega Man X for Christmas. I beat it in a few days. Maybe the mountain bike would have proved a longer form of entertainment. But Mega Man X was the most amazing action game I'd ever played up to that point. Hell, maybe it still is. So yeah Dad, I'd still pick the damn video game.
PLAY KING'S FIELD.

Mega Man X is by far my favorite Mega Man game. I replayed it so many times back in the day. I'll be playing the Windows port this month. I'll start as soon as it arrives at my door.
