Are Playstation 1 parts interchangeable?

Post by Droid party »

Ok Basically I have an old modded Playstation (the large variety) and it is a SCPH-7002. Now the laser is old and in need of replacing. I found that a local repair store could order me in a new laser assembly for $70 which is more than I want to spend to just ressurect an old PS1.

So what I would rather do is just buy another console (preferably the SCPH-9002 because I heard that the laser was better) and take the laser from it and put it in my old console.

Now just want to know if anybody knows if that is ok or not. Or as an alternative. Does anybody know of any online stores that sell replacement assemblies for reasonable prices and with reasonable shipping to Australia.

it depends. i remember doing this to a couple psx so i could end up with 3 psx that had parallel ports. i guess it kinda depends on if the laser assembly is in the same quadrant. sony rotated the placement of it. if you open both you'll know what im talking about.

Looks like it would be a straight swap. I was concerned about the rotation of the drive. But it looks like they've just moved the drive away from the PSU and thats it. No revision in form factor for the drive so it 'should' just plug straight into the motherboard. The only thing to worry about is the cable not reaching as in the mobo revisions they would have just moved the socket on the pcb rather than have a trailing cable. If this is the case you can get replacement laser cables very easily or if you're talented with a soldering iron just solder it in.

in theory, couldn't he take the chip out of the old psx and insert it into the 9002er?

Yeah i forgot about that part. Yeah it might be easier to just desolder the chip and put it in the 9002.

Looks like you're definately going to have to (De)solder no matter what.

Ok thanks guys. It looks like I'm gonna be pulling out the soldering iron this afternoon.

If anybody else has anything to add, please feel free to do so. All input is appreciated, and thanks Vlame for the great pics. They are a huge help.
