Best PS1 backup option today?

I've looked around the internet for a good way to play PS1 backups on my SCPH-7001 model and a lot of the info and tutorials I find are pretty dated. I figured I'd ask here to see what the current best method would be.

I'm not willing to spend a whole lot of money but I can solder if needed.

I don't know about today, but tomorrow's best option may be this: http://ps-io.com/. Its been in development for quite a while but it looks like it is getting close to being done. In a nutshell it is a flashcart for PS1 that plugs into the expansion port. A tiny bit of soldering will be required as well.

I just install a mod chip; Jinn here can help you find one or install one for you. They're only 8 wires so the mod is relatively simple. Replacing the laser assembly is sometimes necessary (reading burnt discs can tax the laser), but they're still easy enough to find. I get my replacement laser assemblies from Rich's PSX Parts. Replacement is pretty simple too.

I've been waiting for the PS-IO for many years, and will get one as soon as they're available.

I use a GamePro Action Disc 1 on the PS2 to play PS1 backups. Originally used it to just play import PS1 games, but then tried out a backup for science and found out that worked as well.

Doesn't seem to work on PS1s, though, only PS2s - which is fine by me, one less thing to have hooked up.

This always bothers me, but they arent really "back-ups" if you don't own them in the first place.

Eh, it's just a sorta legal tap dance. "Backup" sounds more legit than "burn" or "pirate copy."

The PS-IO looks pretty neat but it looks like they don't have a date or a price set yet and I imagine it's gonna be a little out of my price range.

I found this modchip and it's pretty cheap and seems easy to install.

im estimating the PSIO will be about $120 US , i have bought a few of the eurasia PS1 modchips and they work fine i since have bought a USB PIC Programmer it was about $20 so i can burn my own chips. It is cheaper in the long run instead of paying shipping with eurasia each time i need a modchip.


you can buy that eurasia modchip or buy some blank chips and burn/program your own its your choice.

I'll give the Eurasia chip a try. I'm only intending to do this once so programming my own would be pointless.

Either that or seek out a modded one on your local market place.
Do keep in mind that they're not always listed as being modded or chipped.
Just the other day I bought one for a periheral I needed, guess what: modded!
Just ask the seller, is what I'm saying.
