Microsoft is increasing the external storage cap

Post by casterofdreams »

Hello everyone. I haven't been here in a a couple of months. Hope all is well.

Anyway, minor topic: Microsoft announced that for the Xbox 360 they've essentially eliminated the storage cap of external memory for the console. Its 2TBs to be precise.

I was discussing this with a friend of mine we think some E3 announcement will come where they will release a budget 360 with no option for HDD. Basically taking the $179 4GB model, making it smaller, and having it cost $150 flat.

What are your thoughts? Think I'm over analyzing the move? Thinks it's cool we still have such support on the 360?

I think it's a practical long-term solution, which might signal the start of scaling back 360 retail support. It's possible they could make a Wii U-esque design without the internal space for a drive, but either way it means there won't be as much need to keep putting out larger drives and offering them at retail.
The MSRP on MS's official 500GB drive is roughly double what a 1TB external drive is these days. Granted, there are much cheaper unofficial parts out there, but this move will probably hurt those accessory sales...unless they want to get out of that business.
