Starting my New Game Room - Updated 3/5

I recently bought my first house, which has a finished basement so I can finally have a Theatre/Game Room I have always wanted. I just started and so far I have hung and wired my projector, wired all my surround sound and hidden all wires and components in a closet that is in the room. I am trying to make it so you can't see any components or wiring. I had planned on placing my newer systems in the closet (Wii, Xbox 360. PS3, Xbox and PS2), since they have wireless controllers. But the old school systems needed to be in the room and close to the couch. So I went to IKEA and bought one of there storage units to turn into a Classic System Entertainment center of sorts.

What I did was I mounted a surge protector in the cabinet for power, and mounted 2 (4X) system selectors to handle the switching of signals. I ran all the wires in the cabinet except for the one power cord leaving the cabinet and the wiring to the system selectors that sit on top the cabinet. I have hidden the Selector switches behind my center channel speaker on the top of the cabinet. So you can easily switch between systems, but don't have to see them. I then have one set of Composite cables (R/Y/W) and one set of S-Video cables running from the switches to my AV components in my closet. So what I am left with is a cabinet that can hook 8 different systems and have the appearance of a standard piece of furniture. I currently have my NES, SNES, N64, Jaguar, 3DO, Genesis/SEGA CD, and Saturn in there. My only gripe so far is I can't fit the 32x on top my genesis with out pulling it out of the cabinet and that my Dreamcast won't fit on the bottom shelf next to my Genesis. But if I want to I can plug the system into the empty system selector slot and place it on top while I am playing. There is enough room for at least one controller for each system in the cabinet, I have all other accessories and games either in the closet on shelves or in pull out bins under the couch. You can easily change out cartridges for the top loading systems. Also there is enough slack on the wiring if you want to pull the systems out and place them on a coffee table while you play or something like that.

I still have a ton more to do, but at least I can take a break and play some Sonic if I need too. Let me know what you think:

Here are some really bad pictures from my phone. Sorry but my regular camera is not cooperating:

Congratulations! One of these days I will finish my basement, but for now it's essentially my warehouse and packaging facility :)

Thanks, you should see the other side of the basement that isn't finished. I think I have a path cleared to the washer/dryer and the rest is boxes. (grin) I have some serious organizing to do.

Be carefull with the 3do!! my first 3do overheated and died cuz i had it in a little space like that. remember 3do fz10 has no cooling fans, and it's insides are pretty tightly packed! i would maybe invest in a lap top cooling pad to put the 3do on, something like this http://www.hardwarecooling.com/product_ ... 1584b5d599 just a suggestion!

looks great!

Thanks for the tip, I was actually thinking about getting some small PC fans or something and mount them on the back of the cabinet. It can't hurt, just have to figure out how to get the power to them. In the mean time I can just pull the 3do out onto the top when I am playing it.

Well I am moving along. I finally figured out my dvd/game storage problems. I bought a dresser from Ikea to hold all of my movies and I built a shelf system in the closet to hold all my video games. and systems. I am still working on decorating and I have hung a couple posters and the lighting for a couple of them. I still have more wires to hide and lights to hang. Let me know what you guys think.

Thanks, I have to get another smaller dresser for my blu-ray movies and 360/PS3 games. For the most part I have everything hidden away. I still have to build a screen for my projector and start decorating but it is coming along.

The shelves are easy to build also, I used shelves from home depot and some 1x2's to support them.

HeavyMetalMe, Did you finally find yourself a Jaguar?
