Game Gear to Master System adaptor possible?

Post by Scooter »

The Game Gear and Master System share the same basic hardware program. A Master Gear converter which allows SMS games to be played on the Game Gear are quite common. My question is, how difficult would it be to go the other direction and make an adaptor that would allow Game Gear games to be played on a Master System?

I have a Game Gear with a broken display from which I could scavenge the cart socket which would get me halfway to compiling an adaptor. One broken or sacraficial SMS cartridge could supply the other end of things.

Would it be naive to assume it would be as easy as mapping a GG socket pin for pin to a SMS cartridge connector? I guess I could also buy a Master Gear converter and reverse the mapping to make an adaptor that goes the other way, right?

The Game Gear is almost 100% compatible with the Master System, that doesn't mean the Master System is 100% compatible with the Game Gear. The GG has slight enhancements over the MS (more colors, stereo sound). So it's more than just a square peg / round hole problem.

I don't think anything would be permanently damaged if you try it, but, don't be surprised if you get unexpected results.

Didn't the Game Gear have a larger colour pallete? I guess it won't hinder you from making the adapter, but the games might not look right.
