Together Retro: Sonic & Knuckles

Post by racketboy »

Still remember how cool this was when it came out -- played the demo in Target quite a bit -- funny what you remember ;)

Anyway, who's game for this one?

So this doesn't get lost, I'll make the first reply.

I'll probably join in by playing Sonic 2, as that's the last Genny Sonic game I have to beat. I did a full run of Sonic 3 & Knuckles several years ago and got all the emeralds so I could fight the true last boss and it was a blast. And Sonic & Knuckles alone was the first Sonic game I ever beat.

I'm gonna play the Steam version (so Sonic 3 & Knuckles), but I'm not gonna like it.

Mine too. When I got Sonic 3 to put on top of it my mind was blown.

I can remember a friend of mine calling me and saying he got all 14 emeralds and turned into Hyper Sonic. At this point we had known all about Super Sonic but Hyper Sonic seemed so ridiculous that I thought he was shitting me.

From then on it was a race between the two of us to get all of the emeralds on all the characters to see what would happen.

I have the Sonic Mega Collection on Gamecube so I'll play some of it. I don't know how far I'll get at this moment.

I was planning to go for all the emeralds and complete this one. Maybe even as all 3 characters. I have the Mega Drive cartridges.

If I'm feeling particularly brave, I might go for all the chaos emeralds in Sonic 2 afterwards. I'm assuming getting all 7 as Knuckles doesn't offer any bonuses though?

P.S. It's kinda weird seeing 'presented by Graham' on the TR article. If you're not sure who's forum name matched up to the real one, it's me!

In Sonic 2? It does. You'll get Super Knuckles. You just have to double tap the jump button to activate him, like in S3&K, rather than the single jump originally in Sonic 2.

---

Anyway, Sonic 3 & Knuckles is my favorite game period, so I'll play. An hour and a half is enough time to beat standard Sonic and Knuckles twice, and I'm off today, so now's the time!

FYI everyone, in S&K its entirely possible to get all 7 emeralds by the end of the Mushroom Hill zone. There is a route through the two acts that facilitates this, so don't be afraid to abuse it so you can more easily see the true final boss and ending. Giant rings get scarce and difficult to find once you reach Flying Battery Zone.

Note that you don't get to see the TFB unless it's the full Sonic 3 & Knuckles run with all 14 emeralds.

That's not true, as long as Sonic can transform you'll get the Doomsday Zone and the final boss. Sonic 3 isn't needed.

You can even get it with only 7 emeralds in Sonic 3 & Knuckles if you stay out of big rings once you get to Mushroom Hill (since entering a special stage will deposit all of your Chaos Emeralds in Hidden Palace Zone and take away the Super Sonic transformation).

The only requirements for Doomsday Zone are playing as Sonic and having either transformation available at the end of the game.

I don't enjoy this game much... but it's short enough so I might as well give it another go. See if my opinions have changed at all. I may not finish it, but I'll at least make an attempt.
