So there's a sega master system at a Book and Music Exchange near me for 20$, I've never owned one or even played one before, I wanted to get some input on it before I purchased it, I'm probably going to get it either way just to have one, but as I just got a Saturn for the first time a few weeks ago, I won't have much time or money to invest in it.
thanks!
Thoughts on Sega Master System..

I love the SMS. I've never owned an actual system (although I know several people that did/do), but I've had a Power Base Converter for my Genesis since 1990, which is the next best thing to owning an actual SMS console.
The games are a bit of a mixed bag. Some of my favorites are R-Type, Alex Kidd in Miracle World, Kenseiden, Master of Darkness, Captain Silver, Shinobi, Phantasy Star, Golvelius: Valley of Doom and Fantasy Zone 1 & 2. Stay away from games like Strider and ESWAT, though.

It's definitely worth picking up. Games are abundant on eBay. You can get some really decent games for next to nothing.
Atari 2600 (AV mod), NES, SNES (region switch for PAL), Virtual Boy, Gamecube, Wii (D2CKey), PSX (Stealth V), PS2 (independence exploit w/ 160 GB HDD), Goldstar 3DO, Philips CD-i, Dreamcast, Saturn (racketboy's chip), Sega Genesis 2 + CD2 + 32X + Power Base Converter, Game Gear.
I started collecting Master System games/hardware during the 16-bit era, and at the time I marveled at the system's bizarro quirks. After amassing a collection of several hardware revisions and nearly 50 carts/cards, I do love the Master System, but I never actually play it now. Unfortunately, much of the system's library is now redundant: though it was home to many ports that were impressive at the time (R-Type, Space Harrier, Double Dragon, Rampage), there is no need whatsoever to play the Master System version if you have access to a 16-bit port or even the arcade original. The crown jewel of the system's catalogue of original games, Phantasy Star, is still prohibitively expensive to acquire in its original form, and can be enjoyed far more easily (and far more cheaply) on GBA's Phantasy Star Collection.
Again, I do have a soft spot in my heart for the Master System. It's an interesting system to own and explore. But if $20 is going to max out your finances, you may be disappointed to find that you've invested in a system that is more a historical curiosity than it is a game system you'll keep coming back to play over time.

"Oh, no, not in Utica, no. It's an Albany expression."
the question bes, what does it comewith, if it has gun or glasses or even more than 10 games. if the ninja, shinobi or phantasy star is there then yes, get it.

I ended up picking it up, my fiance is super pissed at me for spending so much money on video games lately(haha), so I haven't picked up any games for it, I'm going to a thrift store on the way to work today to see if they have anything cool!
Thanks for all the advice.

NES, SNES, N64, Genesis + 32X, Saturn, Dreamcast, PSP, Game Gear, Gameboy , Playstion, Wii!
On the one hand she is pissed at you for spending money so you plan to spend even more? You are intentionally doing something you know will piss her off? Not cool.clintnfg wrote:I ended up picking it up, my fiance is super pissed at me for spending so much money on video games lately(haha), so I haven't picked up any games for it, I'm going to a thrift store on the way to work today to see if they have anything cool!

On the other hand, are you spending HER money or YOUR (collective) money on video games? If not, perhaps you need a better choice in companions.
My wife and I after nearly 16 years of marriage still maintain separate checking accounts. After we collectively and equitably pay the household bills we do what we want with our own earnings. Money is the biggest factor to screwing up relationships so you need to find a way to manage it to make both of you content or your relationship is doomed.
Back on topic: the SMS is a cool system though it is bulky. I sure like my PBC which saves me space though it has it's own quirks which could be avoided with an actual SMS console. Good job on the great find.
