What are some games you liked, that every one else doesn't?

Post by KayJay »

(BTW, i expect most people to disagree with me, that's kinda expected in a topic like this. :P) I have a couple. First off:

Banjo Kazooie: Nut's and Bolts. Now, i want to point out that, as a Vehicular-based platforming game, this game is awful. I don't deny that. However, it has amazing customization, and the amount of freedom to build whatever you want truly is staggering. Aside from the platforming, the game feels very much Banjo-like, with the soundtrack having a grand, orchestrated feeling, and the characters written with some funny nods to past Rareware games (for example, at the beginning of the game, when LOG shows up, he says something along the lines of 'all forgotten video game characters go to Showdown Town' At which point, Kazooie says "Even ones that sold bad, like Ghoulies?") Now, the game does have some generic missions, and weird controls, but it's still a pretty dang good game.

Sonic Colors:I have no idea why the Sonic fanbase hates this so much. It is just so, much, fun. It's honestly one of the best titles to come out in the series since Sonic CD, and feels like a return to form.

Goldeneye 007 (Wii): I like it as much as the 64 one. Yeah, i said that. They're both amazing, 9/10 games that are some of the best in the respected Genre. me and my brothers regularly get together and not only play the 64 one, but also this game. I guess you could say we love them equally, but differently.

What about you guys? what games out there do you just love?
Currently Playing: Hatsune Miku Project Diva F 2nd (PS3)

Shogo: Mobile Armor Division. Pretty sure I'm the only person out there who liked that one : )

Gex: Enter the Gecko on the PS1. Seriously, where does the hate for this game come from? The first couple levels are kind of a turn off (especially the Toon level, the only real horrible level in the game IMO), then it gets a LOT better. It's such a creative, colorful game with a lot of variety and decent 3D platforming. I'd go as far to say that it's just as good as Crash or Spyro; at least the first games in those series, maybe even better.

I liked it, but I think it was better inside of the mech instead of when you were outside of it. When you were outside of it, the flaws in the LithTech 1.0 engine seemed more apparent, though they weren't nearly as bad as Blood 2.

Yeah it was a fun game, if a little flawed.

Metroid: Other M.

I thought it was fun. I prefer the 2.5D gameplay to the 3D style of the Prime series. Adam authorizing use of Samus' weapons was kind of lame but it didn't bother me much.

Yes. Metroid: Other M is a good game with bad cut scenes. It would be nice if I could skip the cut scenes. Otherwise, this was a criminally underrated game.

I have a penchant for underdogs. Here are a few picks that come to mind:
Image
Trailer:
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers (Wii) - Innovative telekinetic combat, amazing graphics (best on Wii IMO), entertaining characters, big crazy world to explore, fun fun fun. Would probably be considered a Wii top dog if it didn't have the name "Final Fantasy" in the title. Great sense of humor too.

Image
Trailer:
Again (DS) - Really intriguing dark adventure game by CiNG. Held back a bit by lackluster graphics (CiNG was nearly bankrupt at this time), but bolstered by a very strong story that is far darker than any other adventure game on DS outside Theresia or 999. You play a psychic detective haunted by memories he doesn't know if are true or not. This character begins to question his own sanity as the game goes on, and it's almost a David Lynch kind of affair.

Image
Trailer:
Koudelka (PS1) - A survival horror+SRPG hybrid that gets better and better the longer you play it. Completely unique atmosphere and a first rate plot that is totally unlike any other JRPG before it. One of the best female protagonists I've seen in a game, joined by a cut throat thief you never know if you can trust, and a minister having existential bouts with his personal faith. The problem with this game is that its combat system is entirely out of place and too slow. There's still some great boss battles to be had though. The first time I played this game I hated it, went back a few years later and fell in love with it. Very solid voice acting too which was a rarity for its time.

Trailer Gameplay:
Eternal Ring (PS2) - A launch title made by From Software and panned off as a weak King's Field-lite. While it's true there are some similarities present, Eternal Ring feels different than King's Field. The atmosphere is more adventurous than horror, the combat focuses on mixing magic ring powers together (not unlike Jewel Master on Genesis), and the game has a faster pace than King's Field for sure. It's a solid dungeon crawl experience that's fun for those who love to explore. Very nice OST as well.

Trailer 1:
Trailer 2:
And that leads us into what I consider the most amazing underrated game I've ever played. King's Field: The Ancient City for PS2. This is THE dungeon crawler to end all dungeon crawlers. Remembering how astounding this game is almost brings me to tears and that's not even hyperbole. KF: The Ancient City is not a game, it is an experience, a true work of art that will leave you in awe if you can survive to the end. This game starts off with the intent to make the player hate it. That's just a ruse, a firewall to dispel the average gamer. I know that sounds elitist, but until you've played it long enough you can't understand. I was one of those people who played this game for five minutes and thought it sucked and sold it on eBay. Years later I gave it an honest chance and was utterly blown away. If you want the dungeon crawl experience of a lifetime play this! And do it without a walkthrough. It would be a travesty to have some of this game's surprises ruined for you. If I've been too subtle so far let me say OMFG I LOVE THIS GAME
PLAY KING'S FIELD.

I'm a big Crystal Bearers fan.

I also enjoy a great number of notoriously "bad" and/or controversial retro JRPGs including but not limited to Final Fantasy II, Final Fantasy Mystic Quest, Beyond the Beyond, Quest 64, Lagoon, Hydlide, Brandish, and more...

Yeah, and through talks with you, I've begun appreciating many more RPGs as well. I've even defended aspects of Secret of the Stars on here...
