Best WW2 Themed video games

Post by ZeroAX »

So I kind of have this thing with WW2 history (I'm probably one of the few people in the world for whom Poland is a very interesting place to visit, again and again), and was watching these awesome documentaries on TV about it the other day, and it got me in the mood for a good WW2 game.

The most important thing for me would be a game that gets the atmosphere right. Like the Commando series.

No genre restrictions, so hit me with some good ideas, and discuss our favorite games based on the big war ;)

I have friends that re-enact WW2, they are pretty obsessed with Red Orchestra 1 + 2 on Steam.

I almost majored in history, but that's another story. My thing has been ancient civlizations and then WW2 so I love WW2 games depending on the genre or handling though.

I'd recommend any and all of the Call of Duty (other than 3) and Medal of Honor(Rising Sun semi-sucks but opening stages of Pearl Harbor are stunning) shooters from the era from the PS1/PC days up to the PS3 and PS4 era stuff that's either playing to accuracy or screwing with history(wolfenstein new order.) The Brothers in Arms series has been varied but interesting, even that crazy third person shooter that the DS had was very good. One thing for certain, the earlier shooters are more into the history aspect but they also don't have that wussy pressure bar for life so you need to be far more careful since you rely on health packs. COD1+United Offensive and then COD2 are my favorites because they play into actual scenarios, the first being with Easy Company which Brothers in Arms on HBO was based upon.

If you want something different, kind of narrow in its ways but free to play try World of Tanks as they have all the used and also some planned but never executed tanks from the US, Europe and Russia, China too I believe.

Do Cod 1 and 2 have unlimited respawning enemies? I really don't enjoy that mechanic :/.

Any good strategy games? Maybe even adventure games?

P.T.O games and Operation Europe are turn based strategy. As well as Daisenryaku (Iron Storm) and Panzer General

PC RTS Company of Heroes received a lot of praise.

CoH has many good mods, it's absolutely great value.

I play this on and off, very functional with no thrills.

I haven't played it personally (yet), but this is about the deepest non-hex based strategy series on the planet, and the priciest as well.

If you can get over the lack of tutorials or finicky AI, this one is worth investigating.

The Sniper Elite series and its zombie spinoff are fun if not exactly sophisticated in terms of gameplay or challenge.

If you don't have the time to grind at War Thunder's ridiculous F2P system, Steel Fury with its community patch is still the definitive WWII armour sim.

An accessible open-world WWII shooter than takes its sweet time to get going. Pretty good if you happen to like the Parisian setting.

Wolfenstein 3-D and Spear of Destiny = the only two WWII FPSs that matter.

I'm not real big on FPS games anymore, and I never got too into the CoD series, but... One thing to watch out for with the first two CoD games is that the PS2, oXbox and GCN versions are very different from the PC games. "Finest Hour" and "Big Red One," stay away from those.

I played CoD 1 and 2 on the PC some years ago, and I remember enjoying them a lot. Especially 2. And I definitely don't remember unlimited respawing enemies.

I was going to recommend Battlefield 1942 since it was still pretty active/fun last time I checked into it a few years back and EA actually was supporting it on Origin. Forgot it ran on gamespy though :P .

https://www.origin.com/en-us/store/buy/ ... attlefield
Please note: The online multiplayer matchmaking tech for this game has been provided by GameSpy, who has deactivated this service. Because multiplayer is a major part of the game’s experience, we have decided to no longer sell Battlefield 1942 in its current form. For more details, please read EA’s online service updates page.
Another fun game is War Thunder which is mainly centered around multiplayer air combat which can have up to 16v16 battles, but they have now added tanks, and I think there are planes for naval warfare eventually. There are also solo/co-op historical missions that you can choose from as well.

It's free to play and is available through steam as well as stand alone.

WarThunder is a tedious grind. Just put up a $40-50 MP game (with cosmetic DLC) and be done with it.
