Mega Drive/Genesis A/V Cable

Post by grandta13 »

Does anyone know where I can get a decent quality A/V cable to use with the Mega Drive/Master System? The last one I got had worse quality than RF and I would like to avoid spending money on rubbish.

P.S. On a somewhat related note, what is the status of the RacketBoy store? I couldn't find any information on it and I was wondering why the storefront is empty.

They sold off everything in the RB shop quite a few months back.

I just bought mine from a reputable Amazon seller here:

Just pick if you need a Genesis 1 or 2/3 cable and scan through the seller's feedback. If the cable sucks, you could just message them and they will refund you without having you to send the cable back.

I usually stick with sellers with over 95 percent positive feedback and the ones inside the US.

If you really wanna make sure you have a good quality cable, the best bet is to make one yourself. Of course, this requires soldering, so I know it's not for everyone (although maybe you have a friend that could help).

The Master System / Genesis / Mega Drive plug is a standard off-the-shelf plug (unlike the Dreamcast for example). You need an 8-pin DIN male plug. Easiest thing to do is to just get a (good quality) composite RCA (yellow, red and white) cable, cut off one end of the cable and solder the wires to the DIN plug. Doing this, you'll end up with a better cable than what you can find for sale, it wont cost a ton, and you can wire it for dual mono (all of the model 1 composite cables I see are just mono).

Or if you really wanted to get crazy, you could wire a 3.5mm male plug into it so you can get stereo audio from the headphones jack. This would allow you to use just one cable instead of two or having to use adapters.

I bought 3rd party cables online for my Genesis Model 1 and 32x (multiple cables) with no issues. The shielding is not as critical as RF, as long as solid should be okay. The cheap cables I received from different sellers are "Apple Wire Thin". I had concerns of the shielding with the octopus string of cables, but all work just fine on my HD CRT. Even the audio cable plugged in the front headphone jack has crisp distortion free bass.

What kind of TV is your Sega plugged into? The consoles have a reputation of bars in the video, especially when hooked up to a LCD screen.

I used it with an RGB monitor and a standard CRT television. At first I thought that there might be interference from the power adapter I was using (I had a cheap universal adapter at the time), but I later tested it using a good quality power supply with the same issue.
