New TV
New TV
Currently the tv I use for retro gaming is an 18 year old Panasonic 32". Unfortunately the image has started to flicker quite badly with any form of vibration (even sound) so I am looking to get an new tv. I have consoles from the 80's to early 2000's hooked up, so something with composite, component, s-video, and possibly vga inputs. Light gun compatibility would be nice although I have heard these don't work with HDCRT which would be preferable because of increased quality. Any suggestions?

Re: New TV
Always go for major popular brands.
Go fleamarket hunting or thriftstore finding,or any place that sells used stuffs.
Find out where TV's are and start snooping through the back of them to see what connections they offer.
Having the remote is a plus but for some tvs being that old you may not have a choice.
As long a a universal remote can turn on the INPUTS you'll be fine.
Lets just hope the stock setting are to your liking. Fidding with the details gets hard when you dont have the remote.
Ask friends or neighbors or maybe a chruch group to see if any of them have extra TVs to sell or give away.
Large companies or organizations always buy the good Stuff and maybe they dont need them anymore. Ask to see if some local business have old Tvs they dont need anymore.
I wont go into details on the finer details on Composite/component/S-video and that stuff. I dont know much either. As long as the TV works for me.
I'm sure others here can give better advice. But with some proper snooping around and asking, I think you can find a decent tv for less than $50
And $50 is still pushing it.
I've seen decent, large TV's go for at least $20-25 at the fleamarkets near me.

Re: New TV
I usually go to Goodwill when looking for CRTs.
A lot of folks on this board really dig the WEGA line of SONY Trinitrons. I saw one at my local goodwill once, but I had to leave it 'cause it was too big for my car.
I thoroughly enjoy RCA Truflat. They are CRTs with a flat front so there's a nice, wide viewing angle. One of my Truflats has composite and component; another of mine has composite and s-video. I haven't seen one with all three, but it's not impossible.
I have an lcd computer monitor with composite, s-video, component, VGA, DVI, and 1/8 inch audio jack. It also rotates for shoot 'em ups mode It's called a Samsung Synchmaster 215tw.

Re: New TV
Definitely hit up thrift stores, Craigslist, eBay, yard sales until you find a Sony Wega. There ARE other brands to hunt for, but these seem like easiest to find. And they're great TVs.
Re: New TV
I know this is a late reply but I ended up buying a Sony Trinitron Wega kv-36xbr400 I have had it for 3 months and I am very happy with it. great picture quality from all sources no other tv can display both high and low resolution so well on top of that the built in speakers are great.
Re: New TV
If you don't go poking around for an outdated CRT to fit the old systems and you have to go modern, your answers lie within displaylag.com because they rate all the TVs they possibly can with a level of lag they have. I think it was generally accepted there if you can get a tv under 30ms there you'll be good on old style games, but yes clearly light guns won't work. I got a 29" vizio last year and it was like 25ms and almost all games are cool with stock settings, but the few super timing pissy I find using game mode will fix that up. They still make the thing, it was $250 a year ago but I'm sure it's probably near but less now.
