NEC --- If you could have any 30 games on your shelf

Post by mjmjr25 »

Greetings,

If you could have (30) NEC games on your shelf what would they be?

Criteria:
- US and JP ok
- Hu-Cards, CD, Super CD, etc - all ok, anything by NEC
- Price is irrelevant - it should not make a game more likely or less likely to make this list
- Superior ports on SAT / PSX, etc, are relevant
- You do not need to list 30 games
- Please do not just list games - argue for them (or against them)

1. Akumajo Dracula X Rondo of Blood
2. Ys Book 1 + 2
3. Ninja Spirit / Saigo no Nindo
4. Legendary Axe / Makyo Densetsu
5. Air Zonk / PC Denjin
6. Coryoon
7. Blazing Lasers / Gunhed
8. Lords of Thunder / Winds of Thunder
9. Gate of Thunder
10. Ginga Densetsu Sapphire
11. Legendary Axe II / Ankoku Densetsu
12. Final Soldier
13. Kaze Kiri Ninja Action
14. Splash Lake
15. Military Madness / Neo Nectaris
16. Devil's Crush
17. Splatterhouse
18. Spriggan
19. Spriggan MK II
20. Renny Blaster
21. Dungeon Explorer
22. Dragon's Curse
23.
24. Cadash
25. Soldier Blade
26. Bomberman 93'
27. Bonk's Adventure / PC Genjin
28. Bonk's Revenge / PC Genjin 2
29. Super Bonk 3 / PC Genjin 3
30. Parasol Stars

Well I only wanted two games for my PC Engine, and they are pretty obvious

Castlevania Dracula X and Ys book 1 +2

I know about Rondo of Blood and why it's coveted...what about the Y's game? Why is it special?

Ys Book I & II is mandatory. The PC Engine CD port is generally known as the definitive version, and is one of the best gaming experiences ever. Beautiful hand-drawn graphics and incredible redbook audio. I really can't give enough praise.

There are other ports of Ys I & II of course, but they can't touch this one. The graphics and soundtrack are just miles ahead of the other variants.

This thread might hurt. This is a part of my collection that is sorely lacking

Off the top of my head, based on what I own and have played:

Gate of Thunder
Lords of Thunder
Bonk's Adventure
Bonk's Revenge
Air Zonk
Devil's Crush
Alien Crush
Soldier Blade
Super Star Soldier
Splatterhouse
Gunhed
Hellfire S
Bomberman '93
Ninja Spirit
R-Type

I know you don't just want a list...but my answer for each of these will be something like "one of the best shmups of its generation" or "one of the best platformers of its generation" etc. Most of them are regullar features of "best NEC games" lists, anyway...

The tricky thing is that now we're getting into many games that are so old they're arcade ports.

Bloody Wolf and Cadash are excellent on the TG16 - I'd say they belong on the list - but does the fact that (arguably) superior arcade originals exist invalidate them?

In any case, Bloody Wolf is a top down run and gun commando-type game with some exploration elements. Cadash is Taito's classic sidescrolling RPG-action extravaganza. Both are fun as hell.

My NEC collection is also lacking. I've got the hardware - even a PC-FX - but few games...

There are 30 shmups alone that I think are worth owning for the system

Oh yeah, add Legendary Axe II and Time Cruise to my list. +1 for Bloody Wolf and whatever Ys games Bone gives the nod to, too.

I actually started this thread after reading 2 different "best 100 TG16/PCE" lists...of which about 70 titles were unique to each thread...

That's awesome. The NEC library is just so deep and interesting, and it really was the best in its class for shmups in particular. I hope you get a nice list together here.

Arcade versions wouldn't invalidate - but a superior port to another console would. For example, if Steam Hearts were equal or better on SAT-J, then it probably shouldn't be on this list.

For someone who doesn't really "get" console pinball games...are the Crush games that unique that they are better than others?
