PAX South 2015

Post by Jmustang1968 »

So I attended PAX South this weekend for RPGamer. I am from San Antonio and my parents and brother still live there, so it made the short drive from Houston and stay much more convenient.

Being its first year, it wasnt as robust as say PAX East on the exhibition floor, but there were some good panels. They also had a room each just for Bioware and Gearbox.

I will have more detailed coverage in my RPGamer write ups soon, but some highlights:

-Knight Squad is very fun. Described as Bomberman meets Gauntlet (fairly accurate) it is a top down multiplayer arena. Supports 8 players, you run around a grid like arena trying to win the objective, be it capture the grail, juggernaut mode, or even a soccer variant. You have one attack button that swings your sword and respawn times are quick which keep you in the action. There are lots of powerups to pick up such as bow and arrow, increased speed, powered up sword, shield etc... I would recommend this game as something to check out.

-Met with Richard Garriott and Starr Long of Ultima fame who were their supporting Shroud of the Avatar. They were both very interesting and engaging and invited me to interview them and take control of their in studio robot to tour later. I will be looking into doing so.

- Briefly met and saw Sid Meier

-Attended Obsidians Pillars of Eternity panel which showcased some new areas not seen before. I am even more pumped for this game. They have made the Infinity Engine style combat much more engaging. And there I...

-Met with Chris Avellone who we had previously interviewed on the podcast. Before the show we had discussed some restaurants in the area as it would be his first time in SA and thanked me for my bbq recommendation

-Met and talked with the new Banner Saga 2 writer for about 30 minutes. Disucssed a bunch of stuff about the sequel, but he needs to talk with the other devs before posting to see if we discussed too much.

-Played Afro Samurai 2 while talking with the developer. I enjoyed it, though it still needs some love as it had some framerate issues.

-Played Road Redemption which is a spiritual successor to Road Rash. Very fast paced and a bit more loose feeling than Road Rash. Cant say I am a huge fan of some of the physics, but it is fun to play. Should please some of those in here who enjoy the RR games.

-Played Breach & Clear Deadline. A tactical RPG with guns. Kind of like a squad based Resident Evil, but you have pause and go controls. You can play it live action but it is tough. Noise may really dig this one, I liked it and plan to buy it.

-Tried Pox Nora which is a f2p tactical game. I played the tutorial and it seemed pretty good. Very niche and something I would like. But there is no progression of characters as it has a card/deck based design. The f2p may sour some from it.

-Saw but didnt play Majoras Mask 3d. That area was always swarmed. Same with Elite Dangerous on Oculus Rift and Dreadnought.

-Spoke with devs of Life is Feudal which is an MMO rpg set in medieval times that has many minecraft similarities. Open sandbox focusing on crafting and building houses and villages. You can shape terrain and others see it and can affect it. They had devs from Russia, Poland, and Great Britain there and a very impressive booth area with actual stone on the walls. Seems like it could be something Id enjoy but would take up a bunch of time.

I played and checked out several other games, but those sparked my interest most.

Yeah my friend ended up going.

However, my other friend snagged 3 day passes off craigslist for $50 the day of. But wouldve been a risk to come down and not find any.

Damn. I'm glad it was fun. I wanted to attend really badly but my wifes gala thing kept me from going. Then on top of it my little one got his first ear infection and was a total mess the past four days... so even if I had been set to go that would have stopped me.

What was your favorite part of the weekend? Did you get any cool swag?

Not as much swag as I got at PAX East in 2013.

I got a Afro Samurai shirt for my wife, she also got a shirt from some indie platformer game. And a sheep hat from this game KYN. Thought my daughter would like it.

I got a Majoras Mask cardboard/paper mask.

Some button pins and some coupons and such.

Oh and my favorite parts were those highlighted above. Mostly meeting those industry people who made games I love.
