PS3 controller button swap?

Post by Yukima »

This may seem a bit odd... How difficult is it to open up a PS3 controller and swap the X and O button functions? I have a Japanese PS3 and the default button settings are hardcoded to O for accept and X for cancel. For most US games I play, it's okay because the X and O buttons are programmed with the US layout. But a few games follow my PS3's hardcoding and the Japanese O and X layout, regardless of region (ALL the Tales games!) Unfortunately, I play these games the most, and it wreaks havoc whenever I do multiplayer with friends used to the US layout. I'm not willing to hack my PS3, or buy a US PS3 (I bought this one specifically for the nice blue color the US never got) so I thought about buying a few controllers and swapping the buttons and have them as dedicated Tales controllers.

So... is button swapping difficult to do, or can I find someone who can do it for me?

If you wanted to hardware hack the controller to physically swap those two buttons, it's possible but not easy. You'd have to cut the traces for X and O then use jumper wire to reconnect them (in reverse).

Hmm... okay.

I guess if re-wiring the controller is hard, are there any remapping apps or adapters available that don't require jailbreaking? I looked around online and found this adapter:

I wonder, is this any good? Apparently it lets you remap controller buttons, as well as use other console controllers.

It's really good and it will work. I just realized I have 2 of these in my cupboard - each a different model - I don't even remember buying one of them. I decided to give one a try just now. It really does everything it says it can well. I'll have to get a different Bluetooth dongle to get my PS3 controller to work wirelessly as the 4 I had laying in the bottom of a drawer are not fully compatible - I can get a connection to start, but the controllers do not fully pair so I get no input through wireless - the P1-4 lights just blink. They sell compatible ones @ their shop for cheap. You'd think they'd include the bluetooth chip inside of it - as it is you have to buy one separately, and plug the dongle into it's USB input port.

The button remapping is very easy at least; It's amazing everything this little device can do.
