Bungie cuts off Destiny owners from existing content for DLC

Post by Tanooki »

Here's the source: http://www.pushsquare.com/news/2014/12/ ... ng_content

Long story short -- when they just put out the other day a new DLC package, they took away content people who bought the base game had access to and must now pay a fee (the DLC) to get it back. The Heroic and Nightly strikes are now only for DLC expansion pack owners, formerly for all. The snipe is worse as they're the two best ways to gather rare goods and and items including cryptarch engram rewards to get the better/best gear of the game to properly level your guardian to handle the actual game at the later levels offered. Now it's turned into a slog, much like a microtransaction tablet game where you can take months or days buying added gems to get the content.

I'm looking at likely now selling off Destiny as I find this repulsive. I shouldn't have parts of a game I paid full retail for snatched away if I don't pay them more money to re-enable it.

I think it would have been a bigger problem if the weekly and nightfall strikes weren't set in the new DLC. Given the MMO model, I think Bungie has far more people who are still playing the game that want the DLC and want this old content to be updated accordingly. I think they were in a lose/lose position and they erred on the side of pleasing those most invested in the game. If I were in charge, I'd have done the same.

Beyond that, there's no indication that those modes will forever be locked behind DLC. A lot of stuff in Destiny changes week to week, and I would expect weeklys will rotate between DLC and non-DLC content pretty regularly throughout its lifespan.

What an over exaggeration of an article.

The weekly/nightfall strikes change weekly, there are two which are now exclusive to the first DLC. They will be in the rotation, but only for the week.

They can still access all of the strikes at anytime, they are not "cut off", they just can't play the Weekly/Nightfall (which is the features strike for that week), when it is the DLC strike missions.

This is one of the stupidest "controversies" I've seen in a while and proves that people are always desperate to whine about something. The week a new batch of DLC is released and the weekly strikes are set in that content. It would be weird if it WASN'T taking advantage of the new content. What do people expect?

I can see the alternate headline if they hadn't done this: "Bungie has no faith in new content" and the story is that the weekly strike is set in old content instead of taking advantage of the newly released DLC. Players are outraged that Bungie isn't letting them play the new content instead of forcing them to play the "same old strikes we have for the past 3 months."

If you've gotten to the point in this game that you're actively doing these activities anyway, chances are you're interested in grabbing the DLC...

That's assuming that every single person out there pays for and respects DLC. I for one never buy it. I find the concept fairly repulsive charging for added content on a game. A full second game using the same engine like they used to do on discs, sure. But we find often this stuff is already made and held back, or in a more sleazy way left on the disc hidden so you just pay to unlock what you already kind of paid for.

People like me who don't buy it are being locked out of certain things, even if it's not every single week with this game, despite paying for the general access and that isn't right. If they want to have DLC level strikes give it its own icon and let the non-payors use the existing spot.

Personally, I didn't find Destiny to be that appealing, and stopped playing it in the early teens or so. However, being fair, that kind of thing should be expected for the general content model. The game world is going to expand, and trying to keep things in special little roped off sections doesn't work long term.

That said, having paid content this close to release, and for as little content as it seems, doesn't bode well. $20 every few months, if you want to do current/relevant content, is barely different than just charging a monthly fee. Except, DLC, future new or returning players would have to buy too.

This is how many online games work when new content is added. Nothing new here.

Maybe so but I stay away from those monthly fee trap games. I've got Diablo 3 and both Guild Wars games, and when they add content it's another part to the game you won't even miss because they don't lock away parts of the existing package. If that's normal, then I chose well in good games.
