I've been toying around with this idea of coming up with a list of the best games of all time and specifically making time in my day to play through them all in order to experience those that I haven't spent much time with before and get fresh experiences of those that I haven't played recently.
This could also be looked at as a hands-on history lesson of video games.
I think it would be cool to kinda have it in chronological order and maybe segmented by genres, so you can easily see progressions in innovation along the way.
I guess the trickiest thing is to develop a list of worth games and organize them in a way that would be best to experience them.
Any thoughts?

I started playing Alone in the Dark 2 a few weeks ago since everyone was telling me that it was the forerunner to Resident Evil and it was pretty interesting to see how capcom nicked so many ideas from it - fixed camera angles, no walking and shooting, sparse but tough combat, good use of music and so on and so on. I gave up about half way thru though because the single figure framerate was pretty much a game breaker.
But sure it was interesting to see where the genre was spawned from and I'm sure it would be the same for other genres too

I think that's a good idea...I think you should organize them by console generation... Play the 8 bits, then 16, then 32, etc. That way you can see the progresses made as you continue through the games.
Atari 2600 (AV mod), NES, SNES (region switch for PAL), Virtual Boy, Gamecube, Wii (D2CKey), PSX (Stealth V), PS2 (independence exploit w/ 160 GB HDD), Goldstar 3DO, Philips CD-i, Dreamcast, Saturn (racketboy's chip), Sega Genesis 2 + CD2 + 32X + Power Base Converter, Game Gear.

Nothing yet. Just bouncing ideas around at this point.

I think it should be the best game or games from each genre from each system (or at least each console generation)

Cool idea. I'd be worried that there are just too many to play. Maybe some sort of specific parameters? Best games by platform? Go through Sega or Nintendo or PC games through the different eras? The evolution of RTS, RPG, Dungeon crawls, racing games, etc?
Just don't let it seem like work. If you find yourself enjoying one there's no reason to put it down because there are more on the list.

I'll toss this idea out there too....
What about something like a book club, only with games?
Something that the community as a whole get participate in together and share thoughts on a particular game.
Maybe like a game of the week or something?
philipofmacedon, you also bring up some good points as well.

The game of the week idea sounds like a great idea... and for those who don't physically own the game, there's always emulation for most systems.
Everyone can play the game, give their impression of it if it happens to be the first time playing it (maybe an obscure title or a console they never owned) or they can talk about how they got into the game in the first place and what their favorite part of it was.
