Questions about Saturn 3D Control Pad

Post by sega dude »

How does the Saturn 3D Control Pad work with non officially supported games? One of my favorite Sega Saturn games I own is Shellshock. This game would be easier to play with an analog stick. I read over on Sega Retro that the 3D Control Pad has a switch for switching between analog and digital and when it digital mode, all analog functions are disabled. Basically what I am asking is does the analog stick function as a dpad when the controller is in digital mode?

you have to flip the switch.

to either the cross or circle.

not many games support 3d analog anyways.

give it a try and find out.

I'm fairly sure the D-pad still works whilst in analogue mode. Maybe. I could be wrong. Maybe it depends on the game. I do remember though that sometimes if a game is not compatible, the controller will not work at all in analogue mode and you have to switch it to digital mode for it to work. You'll be surprised how many games do work though.

Can anyone confirm or deny if Golden Axe: The Duel works with the 3D pad?

Last time I tried the game (if memory serves), I had the 3D pad hooked up and it refused to even boot (even when switched to digital). No trouble with the regular controller.

I don't have my Saturn hooked up at the moment.

Here's a list of the JP released games that support 3D Control Pad. Don't see GA:TD on there, though.

I just tried this. The game is not compatible with the 3d controller at all. If you set it to digital mode, the game boots the "Licensed by Sega" screen then returns to the cd player menu. If you switch it to analog mode, it will boot up to the game, but no buttons or controls will work. If you switch it back to digital mode while in the game, the console resets back to the cd player menu. Very strange.

Yeah, that's unusual. Normally, games not compatible with the 3D pad just can't use it in analog mode but act just fine with it in digital mode. Actually failing to boot game code is not, I think, a common problem in many games.

Thank you for verifying. I'm glad I'm not crazy and especially glad there was nothing wrong with my beloved Saturn.

I have some regular controllers (better for fighters anyways), so it's not really an issue. Still an odd phenomenon.
