New Nintendo DS homebrew - Geoincursion!

Post by smccd »

Hello everyone!

I have just finished another homebrew game, this time on Nintendo DS! It's called Geoincursion, and it's an old-school arcade style beat'em up with a secondary resource system (energy), and features original music, sounds, and digitized actor graphics!

Check it out at: http://sebastianmihai.com/main.php?t=102&n=Nintendo-DS-development-Geoincursion

Love DS, but not a fan of homebrew anything.

It's like, if someone made a new NES game in 2014. It's not the same...it's just different.

Can you elaborate on what you mean? I think it's amazing that there are developers out there who'll commit their time on making new games for old systems. You say it's not the same, but if it's made for the original hardware then what does it matter if it came out now or 20 years ago? In that same context, how is it different? Old systems are awesome, and it's great that for collectors and hobbyists alike that we can still play new games on them even today!

Straight up, jvalentine98, your comments make you look like an asshole. How absolutely discouraging.

smccd, this is pretty cool. The game itself, obviously, is not going to compete with something similar, but that isn't the point.

The effort it takes to go back and build for closed and unsupported hardware is tremendous. So, I applaud that.

I'd ask what you're more interested in, the hardware or designing a game? Looking at your site it seems like you lean more towards the getting your code to run on random devices thing.

I liked reading the log of how you made it, it was kinda cool. Props to you for not using any premade engines and going from the ground up. Will check this out eventually (gotta get another flash cart one of these days, replaced my DS after it got stolen but haven't gotten a flash cart yet...)
Gunning for a licensed NES NTSC-U set, follow the madness and poverty here!

Wow, there is such a wide spectrum of projects/material on your website, it's really enjoyable looking through it all. Are all of these projects yours? You seem like a very dedicated and passionate hobbiest, and it's especially awesome to see someone developing for more obscure, oldschool consoles in this day in age (Snappy for the Atari, Neo Thunder for the NG, all the hand held projects, etc.) Very impressive and admirable, keep up the good work dude. I'll definitely peruse some of your misc write ups.

Things which are things are definitely things. However, things which are not things are most certainly not things.

On topic: I had no idea people were homebrewing for the DS already. Very cool stuff! It's a shame I gave my DS away but i'll have to get one back one of these days and test some of this stuff out. Love the idea of doing digitized graphics.

This is a great question, Cronozilla; I find various kinds of hardware very interesting. When I was young I found hardware to be mystical, and how programs (such as games) ran on it. So now, I guess what drives me is making my own games run on different hardware.

However, I don't (usually) like to settle for porting games I've already made. I like to challenge myself with coming up with new ideas, but my strength is definitely not game design :)

Glad you liked them, Ghudda. Yes, they are all mine. I find and potentially change bits of dev kits, and then I write my games using them.

Especially for the more obscure consoles, a lot of work went into just finding a dev kit, and figuring out how to make it work from various fragments of knowledge across the Internet. One of my main goals is for other developers to be able to download these dev kit + source code packages I offer for download, and then be able to compile them almost immediately.
