Need Help - Handheld vs Console Versions

Post by GryeDor »

Hey everyone, I'm looking at tracking down a few games and could use your help!

I googled around a bit and only kept turning up debates of console v.s handheld gaming and lists of handheld ports/versions that were terrible.

I am looking for a few titles to research for some future episode of my Game vs Game videos. Specifically, I'm looking for games that were released on both a Console as well as a Handheld AND where the Handheld version isn't just a down-scaled port like Killer Instinct. Instead I want to look specifically where the handheld actually holds its own against its Console big brother.

The two I have on my radar thus far to look into are Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine and Chu Chu Rocket.

Any additional suggestions would be fantastic, thanks!

ooh, Sonic The Hedgehog Mega Drive VS Sonic The Hedgehog GBA

There was also a DS collection of all Mega Drive Sonic games, which is really bad.

Resident Evil on GBC - except it was never released and or finished. The vids are on youtube, though. I woulda bought it, just for fun

Oh and Resident Evil DS is not scaled down, it's actually got more options and modes than the original game on PSX. Note that it is NOT based on the Director's Cut which had different camera angles and music.
They have escaped into the mansion where they thought it was safe, yet.

Kunio-kun would be a good series to talk about, so many ports. Also comparing the SMS to the Gamegear would be cool. So many cross-platform games on those and sometimes totally different.

Here's some more I could think of:

Breath of Fire 1 and 2 SNES vs. GBA
Final Fantasy 4-6 SNES/SFC vs GBA
Final Fantasy 1 and 2 NES VS GBA
TMNT Various consoles vs DS/PSP vs GBA
Sonic Generation PS3/X360 vs 3ds
Sonic Colors Wii vs NDS
Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare DC/PS/PS2 vs GBC
Déjà Vu NES vs GBC
Dragon Quest 1-3 NES vs SFC vs GBC
Dragon Quest 4 SFC vs PS1 vs DS
Dragon Quest 5 SFC vs PS2 vs DS
Dragon Quest 6 SFC VS DS
Shadowgate NES vs GBC
Steel Empire GEN vs GBA vs 3DS
Evolution DC vs NGC VS NGPC
Fantastic Night Dreams: Cotton PC Engine vs PS1 vs NGPC

He did say ports/versions. If you watched any of his videos he covered Aladdin on GEN vs SNES and Goldeneye N64 vs Wii which are not just straight ports either but different games. The Alone in the Dark GBC I haven't played but Sonic Generations follows the same story mostly and Sonic Colors being a direct continuation of the Wii's story.

Donkey Kong Country GBA ports and the Donkey Kong Country GBC port are just scaled down ports are they not? I don't remember those adding anything new. Except a new awful map screen.

Bionic Commando NES vs. GB is one that comes to mind immediately for me. You can argue that it's a scaled down port but I feel it's actually superior in a lot of ways.

Also in the realm of completely different games there's Mega Man 5 where the GB game was an interesting and slightly innovative addition to the series while the NES game was just another sub-par yearly sequel.
