SEGA SATURN graphical issues

Post by gamedudemat »

Yeah so my SEGA SATURN that I've had for 9 years now (has been very reliable) is giving me graphical garbage... sometimes no graphics.

I have a busted saturn too. But it has different types of glitches.

I took it apart once to have a look at it, and I forgot to put some stuff back in it.

I think I took off some type of RF shielding. It still turns on but now it looks like a glitchy NES game. There's lots of horizontal lines and fuzzy areas.

The console still turns on and goes to the menu screen, but there's lots of funny lines.

Many games are unplayable this way. Its either blocky or fuzzy. Since you cant see whats going on.

I played some Sonic Jam and since I played the sonic games by muscle memory and constant repetition. I made it pretty far just on memory.

Anyways. Maybe you took it apart one day and You forgot something like I did?

Maybe there's some messed up Caps in it. We've all talked about bad caps on older consoles. Especially Sega CD and other stuff. Look at the Gamesack episode from about a month or two ago on console modding.

But all in all, my opinion is to just buy another saturn. Are they plentiful where you live? You already have all the parts. Just get the base console.

ive read over at http://segasaturngroup.proboards.com/ a Cap change could help and also Saturns hate dust.

if it were my Saturn i would use compressed air and clear the motherboard of dust , after that take a soft toothbrush and Isopropyl Alcohol and go over the whole motherboard.

after that test

Yeah I guess that is possible, because I have taken it apart a few times over the years. I just deep cleaned it and still nothing. I was told it was the VDP-1 chip, this is the sprites and textures chip.... but uh no soldering skills here... not yet.

Yeah, I'll go over it one more time, I was told that the VDP-1 chip slowly deteriorates over time. I don't know how accurate this is but I will check out the link you sent. And thanks to all who gave info.
