Saturn Analog Pad as Playstation 2 controlller possible?
Looking for help. Nights PS2 comes out later this month and I've got it on pre-order. I am hoping there is an adapter that would allow a Sega Saturn Analog pad to be used on Playstation 2. The other direction seems common but I couldn't find anything I wanted.

I've never seen any adapter able to use the Saturn analog stick on any system.
Look at it this way, the Saturn has to have some advantage to maintain the mystique. Just like Tempest 2000 may have looked better on the Playstation, but you have to have a real Jaguar if you want to use the best controller (you also have to build it yourself or pay a fortune, but my point is valid). We Saturn fanboys can still cling to the fact that the PS2 may look and sound better, but by God the Saturn version still plays better!
The first thing I thought when I played NiGHTS on PS2 was "Wow, this looks perfect - just like the Saturn, only cleaned up!" The second thing I thought was "Eww gross, this Dual Shock turd can't steer NiGHTS for crap!" It may just be my controller, but I suspect it is the potentiometer-type analog. The Saturn 3d Pad used hall sensors or something. If you don't abuse it too much, the old 3D Pads are tanks - I'll probably die without ever having worn one out. The bad side is that while they were great at controlling direction (which is all that matters in NiGHTS), they sucked and controlling how far in that direction (from center) - if that makes sense. It sucks for steering in Sega Rally for example.
Does anyone know of a better PS2-compatible Nights controller?

There's a Saturn-to-Dreamcast adapter out there...

I don't know if you could chain this through some kind of DC-to-PS2 adapter, but you would probably lose responsiveness at that point.
They do make a Sega Saturn brand PS2 controller, but unfortunately it's just the d-pad model...

there is only one way I've found to theoretically attempt this.
There might have been a product called the "Xbox Magic Box" This box converted Saturn or Dreamcast pads to Xbox.

This next item converts Xbox to PS2 or PS1

Problem is that the Magic Box does not seem to be available in any way. I may have found a Saturn to Dreamcast converter but its a very limited edition japanese product

Okay, so think about your ability to controll with analog. You can tip it in one direction, but not all the way, and the game will register the controll to a lesser degree than if you had pushed it all the way. Take a driving game, for example. You come to a lose bend, and you don't want to oversteer your car into the inside barrier, so you push in the direction around half-way, and the car holds its line without pulling in.
This works great on the Gamecube and Dreamcast, which each have a fairly small base, where the difference in the ammount of the direction can be felt through a high ammount of space between the upright default postition and the controller at full postition.
On the Saturn, however, the controll stick has a very large base and very little movement from upright to full. This gives you a much larger ammount of precision in the exact direction you wish to move in 360 degrees, but in the same racing game mentioned above, would be neerly impossible to hold the stick midway between upright and full to prevent oversteer.

OK imagine a centered analog joystick
You can push it in any direction, and in that direction you can push it from center out to the edge. The Saturn 3d pad made it difficult to input how far from the center to edge you wanted to push it, but it was very smooth at changing directions. The PS2 pad isn't as smooth at moving around in circles (changing direction) but offers more precise control in ho far in any direction you want to go.
360 degress around, and anywhere from 0 (center) to 100% (outer edge of movement) are the two types of input in an analog joystick. NiGHTS is only affected by the direction, but driving games really care about how far in any direction you push the stick.
a digital pad only has 4 directions and either full or zero distance in any direction, though you can simultaneously input 2 directions that are only 90 degrees apart, effectively giving you 8 directions (up/left, up/right, down/left, down/right)

Saturn analog controllers do not work on a DC with a PS2 adaptor, regular PS2 Analog sticks do work, although I tried out with a different adaptor, I still doubt another adaptor would work.
Has anyone EVER used a Saturn Analog controller on anything that wasn't a Saturn??
