Racketboy steam curator group. Halloween themed games

Racketboy Steam Curator

Theme for 27/09/14 to 15/10/14:
Halloween Games
Nominated so far:
  • Costume Quest by J T
  • Among The Sleep by noiseredux
  • The Secret World by ZeroAX
Here's how this works. Every 2 weeks we will post a theme on this thread for game recommendations. Then you will have 2 weeks to post game recommendations based on that theme. To recommend a game, it must fit into the selected theme and you must have written a short 2-3 paragraph review to go with your recommendation. If you already have written one for your blog, or you have a video review of it on youtube, that's also ok since Steam allows us to post external links for reviews.

Once 10 games+reviews have been submitted for the list, it will be posted on steam (together with credentials for the person who submitted it of course). The reason I would like to restrict this to 10 games at a time is so the curator group doesn't get overwhelmed by too many same-y submissions, and the change of theme for games is so people can discover different stuff. But the more popular themes will come back in the future for extra installments.

An example schedule could be:
1) Retro style indie games
2) Best DOS games
3) Old school RPGs
4) Old school FPS games
5) Retro style indie games 2
6) Local multiplayer games
ext.

Each submission period will last 2 weeks. Submissions will be made publicly on this thread, to foster discussion about the games :) (also for congratulating each other for a job well done, cause we're that kind of community).

So in short we have the following rules:
Game must be on steam.
Game must fit the theme of the (2) week(s)
You must submit a review
We stop accepting submissions at 10 entries though if you've already written a review and just missed the final slot for like 3 hours, it's not like we will refuse it

And I'm going to be posting here the previous themes and entries in the curator group.

Past Themes:
//Nothing yet
Games already on curator list (in alphabetical order):
//Nothing yet
Original Post:
So anyone who has used the new steam interface must have noticed the new feature of steam curators.

Steam curators are basically entities that recommend games. So if you follow a curator you will have your store front page updated to include games it recommends.

In order to become yourself a curator you must have a steam group and then the owner of the group can recommend games, or he can just choose the option to let the community recommend games

http://store.steampowered.com/about/curators/

Since we have a group with 180 members I was thinking a racketboy curator group would be VERY useful for discovering retro themed games (heck, I just found out about La-Mulana because it popped out on my home page cause of the people from RB I have as steam friends).

So what do you guys think? This way not only will we turn the group into a tool to help the racketboy community discover great hidden gems on steam, but also get new people who are into retro style games find out about the site (from steam). :)

Who actually started that group? That would be the first hurdle.

 well I see like 5 active members I know are admins for the group, so I don't think we are at risk of losing control of the group

I must have misunderstood, I thought only the founder of the group could be a curator.

I'm not 100% sure if the admins have the power to change this, but they give an option that allows for the owner(/admins?) to allow normal members to also propose games in the name of the group.

So racketboy could become a REALLY good curator about obscure retro style indie games.

I think we should arrange it and it would be awesome to allow a different group of users each month to propose games. Maybe they can each write a small review/article about the games and it can go on the site too?

Nice idea. Mozgus made me an "officer" of the Steam group awhile ago, which gives me certain administrative privileges. I think I can help publish curator lists if people want to start making them.

Risk of Rain

Or should I wait to start shooting off at the mouth with suggestions?

So from what I read on the site a group can recommend as many games as it wants, and it can add reviews or even links to reviews or youtube videos about it.

I was thinking of making a thread (or changing this one) into a games submission thread where anyone can recommend a retro themed game and submit a short review. I think it should be mandatory to post a short (2-3 paragraphs) review about the game for 2 reasons:
1) It's going to be a fun community project this way

2) It won't just turn into a "who can name the more games" thing, and people can provide proper arguments why the game should be on the list.

And of course the user who wrote the review gets credited on the steam group? :D

I think we should curate a few lists that are in line with the racketboy main page, such as a list of defining DOS games or hidden gems of the 90s Era of PC Gaming. I also like your idea of a retro-themed indies list.

Good ideas....are those games available on steam though? I guess some will be as re-releases though (see monkey island). Can we also just copy/paste the reviews from the site there?
